What's on your mind (2026)

Just had a small bird crash into our kitchen window. It moved a little bit, but it seems to have passed away.

Beats getting eaten alive by a hawk, but I’m upset nonetheless

Awww, so sorry. Poor bird.

In a former office in the same building we’re in, we had a Canada goose hit our front windows. Very loud, very traumatic for our receptionist.

Since they’re federally protected, Property Mgmt couldn’t do anything until the local police officer got approval on the phone from the animal control officer to remove it.

We have a local wildlife rescue I’d have contacted, but it was too late for that poor little birdie :broken_heart:

At the end of October, I went to Chicago to see Mom again. She didn’t remember my name. She knows I am family, but is unsure who, exactly.

My partner and I killed some time taking a couple of Frank Lloyd Wright tours in Oak Park. Recommended.

We also saw David Byrne in concert w/ my cousin. That was pretty spectacular. Should his tour swing your direction, go.

We drove down to Champaign/Urbana to see my old college campus (UIUC ‘90). Never doing that again. The pizza is way worse than I remember, and things have changed drastically. The old infrastructure has been altered to the point of unrecognizability.

I think a lot about “If this is the last image I have of my mom, am I ok with that?”, knowing any future visit will only be the same or worse. IF I decide to visit this spring, it will likely be the last one. And that’s a very large, emphatic “if.”

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I was lucky to catch my mother when she still recognized me, but it was weird knowing that it would be the last time we saw each other.

On a happier note, there is nothing I would love more than catching David Byrne live!

It was a neat show. The musicians were a highly choreographed ‘marching band’, similar to his Utopia tour from a few years ago that was filmed by Spike Lee for HBO.

The addition this time is a full LED backdrop and floor. This gives the performers the uncanny impression of being pasted onto a background with no shadows, thus ‘flattening’ stage. It’s a really neat effect.

What was stunning was 45 and 50 year olds pulling out joints and lighting up in an indoor theater!! And not even like a big arena. This was a downtown theater with boxes and velvet curtains and whatnot.

Haven’t these people heard of gummies? sheesh.

I saw The Eagles right before the pandemic at MSG. The oldies (and they were more like 70) were breaking all kindsa laws!

Gummies don’t work for everyone. That said, vapes might’ve been slightly less odiferous, or at least less obnoxious.* And not a fire hazard :scream:

*I wouldn’t have minded :hugs:

It’s not the lawbreaking I mind. Weed is legal in Illinois, anyway. But you don’t smoke in a theater. It’s just rude.

I’d have been more forgiving if they were genuinely old hippies. These were GenX folks who should know better.

So instead you think about all the good times you had with your mom. They’ll far outweigh the last sad memory of her.

So very sorry you’ve been dealing with this. So difficult for those who are “left behind”. Dementia is a bitch.

Well, I’m a GenX folk who grew up smoking in clubs and restaurants, and I miss those days!

I saw “American Utopia” on Broadway - it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I wasn’t even even (or at least I wasn’t before that night) a Byrne superfan. As the musicians from my youth continue their inevitable retreat, I suspect that will be the last night of communal teenage-nostalgia musical joy I’ll ever experience. If that’s true, I think it was a fine way to go out.

I just came home from our town’s blood drive. They have about 4 of them per year, and I try to hit every one of them. I’m CMV Negative and they really need that blood for infants that require blood.

Any who, I’m always reminded of the time I tried to ride my bicycle home from donating blood. I definitely earned the “Dumb Dan” moniker that day.

I’ve planned leftovers for the ladies (for lunch and dinner). As I’ve aged, I noticed I feel a bit weak after I give them a pint.

I used to donate back in my uni days, mostly at the university clinic/hospital. They’d give you a sammich afterwards, which was often my first meal of the day.

One time I had the brilliant idea to light up on the drive home. After two drags I had to pull off and turn the car off. I thought I was going to pass out :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

No sandwich, but they do give you salty snacks and cookies. I bring the cookies home for Sunshine… I’m more of a salty snack person.

I feel guilty about driving the car such a short distance, but I don’t want a repeat of the “Dumb Dan” incident.

Better safe than sorry. I’m no longer allowed to donate blood, unfortunately. Sure would be a nice additional source of “income,” not to mention being able to help out still. Shame cuz 0- is pretty universal & in great demand.

I can’t remember ever getting money to donate blood. I did get a voucher for a quart of hand packed ice cream (from a local Ice Cream place) - which immediately went to Sunshine!!

I think I got a T-Shirt once, but never cash.

I’m OK just knowing that my blood may help someone – even better if that someone is an infant.

I donate platelets every four weeks. The American Red Cross rewards donors with points, which can be redeemed for ARC stuff. I have a TON of Red Cross t-shirts.
