Nothing in current use. A popcorn popper failed last year, no flames. There’s also a citrus juicer and a small food processor, at the bottom of a closet. Oh, wait, the washing machine.
It was inevitable. Mom fell in the hallway at her Assisted Living facility and broker her hip. Well, technically, her left femur near the hip joint. After being transferred from the ER she spent the night in the hospital. Surgery was supposed to be today, but some level or other wasn’t right, so it will likely happen tomorrow. Pins and rods, apparently. It’s only an hour-long procedure.
After that and immediate recovery it’ll be rehab of some sort. Exact nature and duration TBD.
Our friend group has already jokingly started the death pool. Where’s your money? Stroke? Heart attack? Aneurysm?
She’s actually in excellent hands. I’m not worried in the least about the level of care she’s getting.
I am anxious because we have an upcoming 12 day trip to Costa Rica in a few weeks. And the very pricey tickets are very much not refundable. I have resolved, should the worst happen 2 weeks from now, all the services and such can be put on hold until I return. Mom’s cremation has been arranged for and prepaid. She will be fine sitting on a shelf for a couple of weeks.
That sounds incredibly callous, and maybe bingeing Schitt’s Creek is rubbing off on me. But I’m the only one left that’s ’in charge’ of all this. So, if I have to be the responsible party, I get to dictate whatever terms I can.
I am not missing out on the sloths!!

I’m so sorry. No doubt you are worried, despite your light-hearted post (I’m the same way — shitstorms and other calamities are best dealt with humor).
I guess it’s too late to get travel insurance? At the very least, would the airline refund in the case of death? One would hope so, but given how companies are all about profit, perhaps not
Wishing you both the best under the circumstances.
I’m absolutely serious about going on my trip. There is no logistical reason at all that the service and interment (what a word! Yeesh!) need to happen at any particular time.
Jewish tradition says burial should be as swiftly as possible (24-48 hours, usually), but as Reform Jews, traditions are more…. suggestions. Cremation isn’t generally a Jewish thing either, but it’s fairly common (if not exactly a default) for Reform Jews.
For context, this trip has been in the planning for a year. We, and another couple, are all flying down together, to meet a third couple, mutual friends, who now live in Costa Rica full time. There’s a whole itinerary and such that would be utterly thrown if we backed out as a couple, and I’ll be damned if I’m the only one to miss it.
Well, then. Enjoy your trip to the fullest!
I’d never heard of him, and if it hadn’t been for your comment here I might’ve skipped that obit.
Now I really want to watch some of his films. What are your favorites (if you can pick a few), and is it ridiculous to hope some might be available for streaming?
Your mother is going to do great, us old broad are indestructible. Enjoy your vacation.
The bottom of the oven. It feels kind of like Apollo 13 turning the spacecraft around and seeing the extent of the damage.
Titicut Follies is devastating and a must. I also love In Jackson Heights, Menus-Plaisirs (obviously, it’s all about food), Racetrack, Public Housing, High School, Ballet and Meat (aka “one reason I now longer eat it”). I think some are available to stream on Kanopy?
Also one on UC Berkeley, right up the street.
I want to see Menus-Plaisirs, but I can’t find it anywhere. My instance of Kanopy doesn’t have it. Justwatch says it’s not available.
Yeah, Titicut Follies was my first choice.
Thx for the list!
Some of the old ones I saw on PBS - they were temporarily available. I think I saw Menu at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens? And Titicut Follies when I was in film school!
You might have to buy the DVD.
Okay, my version of Kanopy has a ton.
I am a member via the Hudson Valley Library System. Maybe you have a library card that would give you access as well?
My PIC should be able to get access through the uni libarry. Great selection!
Yes! Hope you can get access, too!
Since we cohabitate that should not present a problem ![]()
It’s all through online login etc.
This is the best news out of everything. I say go an enjoy the sloths and the warmth of Costa Rica! And healing sent to your mom.
Insurance plan eliminated by the company, my doctors don’t participate with new plan. None of my prescriptions are covered. I think I am at a crossroads where I might decide that I just cannot continue to fight the uphill battle of trying to survive this world anymore.
