What's on your mind? (2025) - good way to start... even if a bit early... :-)

Not. A. Fan.

Don’t get me started on the random inclusion & exclusion of culinary terms in the Spelling Bee, or the inclusion of alternative spelling :woman_facepalming:t3:

Gorgeous! In bella Italia?

I write terse notes to Spelling Bee at least once a month. Often to point out that some “crossword-legal” words, like riata, are un-allowed, and what’s up with that? (Some languages are more equal than others, is what’s up with that.) I take credit for the current (at least last time I checked) inclusion of “coir.”

SĂ, sĂ, signora!

I’ve only been playing for a few months, so this is the first time I have encountered an abbreviation. When I Google the issue the only thing that pops up is yesterday’s Wordle. Have there been other abbreviations in the past?

I think it’s not considered an abbreviation anymore BY SOME.

OK, since it’s the next day - I’ve been an ADMIN my entire life (although it was called a Secretary when I first started out in 1978) and I’m an Administrative Manager now…and I consider ADMIN an abbreviation. I don’t recall seeing abbreviations before in Wordle, but I’ve been playing for several years and there’s no way I’d honestly remember if there had been one. LOL

It seems that some words are defined as “short for” as opposed to “abbreviation of” and that makes the difference. At least to some.

Miriam-Webster dictionary says it’s an abbreviation.

I told my daughter I submitted feedback on the Admin thing to Wordle and she thought I was crazy - “you complained to The NY Times about Wordle ?”

There’s a whole Facebook group dedicated to the rather random inclusions in Spelling Bee.

It’s called “That’s totally a word.” I was invited by a friend & left bc I like to grumble about it on my own.

A partial list of words that should be included but aren’t, from my “sent” folder:

footman, abattoir, phthalate, mache, unpopped, biding, whinge, giardia, anole…

And “cope.” “Cope” didn’t used to accepted (it is now).

It’s good to have a hobby, no?

That’s SB, not Wordle?

Right.

I mostly get pissed about the acceptable / non-acceptable cooking terms. Naan is included, as is raita, but others that are just as familiar are not.

And random alternative spellings like teepee and tepee, but not tipi. And plenty others.

Plus words that might trigger people. I won’t list them here, in case they actually do trigger people.
