What's on your mind? (2025) - good way to start... even if a bit early... :-)

Do we all get to see honkman’s sleuthing results, or should he keep it to a DM?

ETA: I guess neither of you can send one another msgs, since both of you have a hidden profile. I always wondered what that’s all about. You’d probably have to k!ll me if ya told me :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Sorry but one thing I value most is time and for people which are more responsible with their own social media life and would require more time to ā€œexploreā€ I would only do it if getting paid with my normal consultancy fee.

Everybody can be tracked down but it is better to make it more complicated for ā€œthemā€

Another ā€œSquirrelā€ diversion!

Is my profile hidden? I dont think i did that (unlesss i was drunk at the time).

Publicly is fine with me, btw.

Edit: found the ticker to unhide my profile. Should help the HonkBro.

Annoying, if not rude: when calling a business, in this case, our veterinarian…

them: ā€Hello, Kitty Palace, can you hold?ā€

without waiting for an answer I am placed on hold and the stoopid run of ads for ā€˜enhancing my pet’s well being’ are played

them: ā€œAre you on hold?ā€

me: ā€œWhy yes!ā€, then back to the recordings….Ay yi yi yi😵

No, ā€œHow may I help you?ā€, etc. until an eternity passes. Then ā€œwho are you calling for?ā€.

Certainly not the person that is answering the phone! I know they’re busy. I can be on hold for a reasonable time. I’m not going anywhere.

That is bad, though. IMHO the person answering the phone needs training. The vet practice we use isn’t huge but is pretty busy (6 docs, but 2 are half-time). Their standard is ā€œIf this is not an emergency, can you please hold?ā€ and they always await the response before doing it. Elevator Muzak instead of ads, and someone picks up again within about 30 seconds.

The only reason I’m kind of over-aware of their norm is my old big dog is over 15 (google says ~ 95-103 years human). He’s on 5 meds for a chronic condition that needs monitoring, but otherwise he’s surprisingly well and happy, just slow. But some of the meds they switch every 3rd week to ā€œpulseā€ him for a week of something stronger. And those they pulse aren’t on the same schedule. Because of this I’m always running out of different stuff at different times, so I’ve probably called them 20+ times a year in the last 18 months for refills (they just text me when ready).

Last week he took a sudden downturn so I called and one of the docs came out and visited him here. He offered to switch him up to something else, but also offered euthanasia. I figured why not try the switch, and it seems to have worked quite well so far; he’s actually a fair bit better than the weeks before.

And thus, WOYM? becomes UARCFOC!

We will be changing vets after this old boy is done. The extensive conversation I had with the real veteranarian on Tuesday afternoon was informative. We were instructed to pick up a liquid antibiotic and some samples of kidney Science diet. We got there a little after1 pm, they didn’t have anything, nor a clue. We asked the front desk to review the chart. Nothing. We left after telling them to call us when they figured it out. 5:15 pm we got the phone call. They had the stuff ready, but they close in 15 minutes. No apologies, nuttin’. Got the medication, but not the right ā€˜sample’ food. Idiots!!!

That’s infuriating. I hope you can find a better vet promptly.

I changed vets after 25 yrs plus. Same reason. The kicker was when they were supposed to call me back about a service my little guy needed urgently, and didn’t.

The Nerve!

Ug.

We switched vets because they said my old big dog had snapped at one of them (as described, a feint) and thereafter said he’d have to be muzzled during visits. They didn’t tell us when it happened - they told me on the next recheck visit and tried to force a muzzle on him then, and it was scaring the crap out of him. I walked.

I understand rules, but there were some extenuating circs of their making. He and his brother were being kenneled there for a week while we were in HI, and 3 days in he and another couple of dogs came down with some insanely itchy rash. Apparently they did figure out which pup was ā€œdog zeroā€ and were treating mine and the other 2 dogs for free.

But between that and the general stress of being in a large (loud) kennel for a week (the incident happened during treatment on day 7), you’d think that general visits would be okay unmuzzled. I think he’d been being seen there for about 4 years.

Anyway, glad we found this/current practice next and we’ve been there for about 11 years.

That was also the last time we kenneled any of our dogs. Pet sitters are not much more expensive for 3 hourly visits a day, and a lot less stressful for the animals. Getting used to trusting someone with a house key was a bigger hurdle, but i installed a new front door deadbolt that could be tumbler reset to a second key, so the petsitter’s key only works when i want it to.

I called one of the ex vets we had been seeing at this current clinic to find out what’s up. Well, as it was explained to me, there are corporations buying up smaller vet clinics like crazy. Our current vet clinic is going through that process. Our old vet left because he did not want to be a part of that machine.

Yeah, there was a NYT article about that a couple months or so ago. Just like large medical providers are buying up smaller practices, and for the sole purpose of the highest possible profit.

there is a trend at my local vets to not work with online pharmacies (e.g. chewy) I have a cat with multiple conditions that require medications and equipment (needles). I typically get good pricing online, about 30% cheaper than local pharmacies and it’s delivered to my door. I’m all about supporting local vets, but at a 30% premium it just adds up to real money. I’ve had to get physical prescriptions and mail it in to chewy bc the vet’s office will no longer work with them. it’s a real pain.

This is exactly what happened to the vet practice that I left after having been a client for 25+years.

ETA: they never told anyone about the acquisition, only that the founders were retiring. I sussed it out on my own.
