Watching Next of Kin on BritBox
finished up The Diplomat season 2. it was very obvious where it was going. i would have appreciated a more clever plot. still really enjoyed it.
i found myself thinking about a film that had an impact on me (there are many of those). this is one of the few films where i thought, no i won’t watch this again because the experience was one of a kind (caught me at the right moment i’m sure). well, i just watched it again after all these years. it’s available on most platforms.
The Lives of Others is my favourite Austrian movie.
I’m currently watching Season 2 of The Diplomat.
We liked Next of Kin on BritBox.
Great German movie. Ulrich Mühe was fantastic. He died far too young of pancreatic cancer.
I love that movie to death.
Working our way through Carmen Curlers on PBS, Lincoln Lawyer and The Diplomat on Netflix and last season of What we do in the Shadows. Also enjoyed Netflix documentary about Martha Stewart. Finished up Moonflower Murders and Only Murders in the Building last week. Both really good. Probably will start Elspeth but hate all the ads.
Relatively mindless entertainment is just what the doctor ordered. I randomly picked Trap, the latest Shamalayan flick, thinking my PIC wouldn’t be interested anyway.
Given my low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by a well-done thriller that kept me engaged until the end, and which for once didn’t indulge his penchant for unusually (and unnecessary) dumb twists. The pop starlet is convincingly played by one of his offspring, Saleka — who I’ll have to assume already has a blossoming career as a pop singer, given that the entire soundtrack consists of her œuvre, and former heartthrob Josh Hartnett does a decent enough job as the killer dad.
I also rewatched the brilliant South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, the themes of which (censorship, puritanism, hawkishness, isolationism, othering, etc. etc. etc.) are rather eerily relevant as much today as they were in 1999, if not more. Yikes.
Great soundtrack, too.
We are about 13 years late to the party, but finally finished watching all 4 seasons of The Killing. I didn’t have access to it when it first debuted back in 2011. Fortunately I was able to find it on Hulu. It was outstanding, and kept you guessing throughout. Every time we expected it to zig, it zagged. I have never seen so many red herrings
The OG Danish version, or the US version? I thought both Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos were incredible, but the rain shoulda won an award as supporting actor as well
The one with Mireille Enos. I didn’t realize there was another version.
Yes, I have never seen so much rain
One of my fav actors.
I’ve not seen him in much lately.
Altered Carbon, For All Mankind, The Secrets We Keep
The Silent Hour is just out.
Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger
Very interesting documentary on TCM hosted by Martin Scorcese about these two British filmmakers… Premiered last night and will be shown again on November 14th. Highly recommended.

Finished Disclaimer. Kinda pissed I wasted time on this nonsense.
When I was a wee ricepad, I loved the childrens’ book Ferdinand, so when I saw the movie was available to stream for free, Mrs. ricepad and I decided to watch it. Big mistake. The first 15 minutes or so were cute, then it went right into the toilet and never emerged. We watched it to the end, certain that it would get better. It did not. Don’t waste your time.
Ferdinand the Bull?
When my daughter was 5 she so loved that book that she had it memorized, she couldn’t read yet.
For a kid’s talent show, I put her in a red dress and made horns for her head.
She was on the stage, telling the story. At one point she forgot what was next, I held up the page and she picked up where she left off.
That’s the one. Skip the movie. I mean, I get it, it’s a really short story with a pretty basic storyline, so they had to beef it up (har) for a full length movie. It would have been better as a 5-minute cartoon.
I liked the first few episodes and then it went down hill so I didn’t renew my subscription just to watch the last two. Glad to know I didn’t miss anything.
