What do you get at Chinese take-out?

I haven’t had Moo Shu anything in years. I should revisit.

I’m guessing he may have meant chkn bullion powder. I’ve never had Chinese chicken wings.

I’ll get shrimp lo mein usually, with some egg rolls. I like rat on a stick (char siu chicken or pork). Ha gow dumplings are amazing. LOVE hot/sour soup.

We used to have great Chinese food in Milwaukee. Then the buffets moved in, and now it’s Gen. Tso and crab rangoons, baby.

Back when we had Chinese restos sans buffet, my favorite was shaved pork with black bean sauce. I don’t get much Chinese takeout.

Isn’t it great to have boredom? I look forward to even more. Never thought I’d love slowing down so much. Without all the restos, you learn to cook what you want.

Yesterday I had my morning jo on the back porch and two deer just came sauntering through. One stopped to much something or other, then they just walked. I drank on and felt blessed. Pretty sure it’s the scent of Folgers instant (roasted in NOLA) that brings 'em in.

it’s hard to believe that we live on the UES of NYC and our chinese takeout options are about as good, or depending on how you look at it, as bad, as my brothers, who live in central Florida. However, that may have changed, a couple of promising places are in the hopper to try.

I had never tried duck sauce or Kung Pao chicken until I lived in Midtown. Kung Pao was popular back then because of Seinfeld.

In Ontario, the little packets of sauce served with egg rolls are usually plum sauce. I enjoyed trying a lot of Chinese food all over Manhattan when I spent a year there a lifetime ago. I only got delivery once, I usually walked to get my take-out.

My favorite take outs would be shrimp with lobster sauce, or sweet and sour pork, shrimp toast, and won ton soup. Yes, I’m a peasant! Or a little kid.

I have never had shrimp toast. I need to try it.

Trader Joe’s used to have a great version. Alas, no more. Here in the States, Phillips has what I think is the same thing. Idiotically expensive. Note:Phillips crab anything is just BS. They started as a restaurant in Ocean City, Maryland. One of my dorm mates in college worked there over the summer. She was also … a Ford Agency model. She was horrified when Phillips posted a photo outside the restaurant of an ad she had appeared in. Ah, the days before the Internet.

the well-regarded Szechuan gourmet was a short walk from our office and, over the course of working through their menu, happened upon the Szechuan version of kung pao chicken and it’s been something of an obsession since.

I’ve come to believe that, based on similarities in the menu, there were several restaurants loosely associated with SG, and they served the same kung pao recipe but at this point, post-pandemic, it’s not that easy to find.

I’ve tried to replicate their recipe at home many times but haven’t really come close. Still, as long as szechuan garden remains open on the uws, we can take the cross-town bus to zzechuan goodness including the original Szechuan gourmet recipe.

best,

Completely slipped my mind-shrimp toast. Haven’t had it in decades either. Beer food of my youth.

I tried Gobi Manchurian/ Manchurian cauliflower from the Hakka part of a Indian restaurant’s menu last night.

I wasn’t a fan of this version.

I’m guessing this dish can vary a lot!

TJ’s used to havé wonderful frozen shrimp toast. And yes, they discontinued it. Phillips has a frozen version that is quite acceptable - especially if done in an air fryer. It is sadly a lot more expensive than the TJ’s version was - but eerily similar. Of course, there aren’t too many versions of shrimp toast that I’ve ever seen, and in my lifelong love affair with Chinese/American Chinese food, I’ve ingested mass quantities of shrimp toast, which I love.

The other faves from my youth are shrimp with lobster sauce, sweet and sour pork, and fried rice. And spare ribs. And wonton soup. I’m hopeless.

Moo shu pork, scallion pancakes, egg foo yung, crabby rangoons for me; almond chicken, garlic fried calamari for the roomate. This would be somewhere other than our dead food culture, here.

Mine too; and Yang Chow fried rice. Won ton soup, sometimes, and almond jello when available (hard to find nowadays).
