Went to an actual movie! In a theater! The Devil Wears Prada 2! Turning in my aesthete badge, and I don’t even care, it was fun, especially the Lady Gaga scene. H is probably gonna make me go see The Mandalorian & Grogu now, but that’s fair.
We already have tickets for Mandalorian & Grogu… lol
Another very funny episode of Widow’s Bay. Who knew Matthew Rhys was so good at comedy?
We also started That Mitchell and Webb Look on recommendation here, which is also funny AF.
Saving The Boroughs for a Berlin binge, which someone referred to as “Stranger Things with adults.” And here I thought the kid thing was the show’s main charm (?).
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) - dir. Jon Favreau
The Mandalorian tv series was the first indication that post-Lucas Star Wars might not be a complete waste of time. Even as last trilogy ran stumbling into walls with the blast shield over its face, the Favreau / Dave Faloni team showed that they seemed to understand at least some of what made Star Wars fun and interesting. As with all things these days, they have proceeded to then drain every single ounce of content they can from the concept until it’s a limp dishrag.
This “movie” feels like nothing so much as a double-length tv episode of a show that can’t seem to make up its mind about what it is or where its audience is at. You have the fairly dark, surprisingly violent tone of the early Mandalorian seasons (and even the original film) all mashed up with cutesy kid-friendly humor and Grogu hopping around and cooing like Gizmo from Gremlins.
There are a number of celebrities with prominent roles like Jeremy Allen White, but they’re controlling motion-captured aliens and fed through voice processing so much they’re unrecognizable.
And the score for this film felt completely incoherent. It was melancholy during action scenes. It was spooky during exposition dumps. Someone accidentally assigned all the tunes random file names and they just shoved the music together in any order.
As a couple of middle-of-the-road, “meh” tv episodes to a show on a network I already subscribe to, this was fine. As a 2 hour movie I paid $14 and change to sit through, no. This is not acceptable. Not at all.
1.5 / 5 cringing reminders of how silly the Ewoks felt back in 1983. Remember that? Grogu. Same thing.
I’m sorry this write up is a few days too late for some of you.
We started watching Series 12 of The Great British Baking Show/Great British Bake Off on Netflix recently. It was recorded early in the pandemic, so after a quarantine period, the contestants, cast, and crew were all in one bubble for the duration. We can’t be the only ones who think Jurgen (the German physicist) sounds like Heimlich the caterpillar in A Bug’s Life, can we?
You. Could. Not. Pay. Me.
But I’ve never been a big Star Wars head, and haven’t watched any of the ‘recent’ reboots.
