Firebird, Stravinsky.
Commissioned by Diaghilev, who knew how to assemble talent.
That whole era brought about astounding collaborations in multiple art forms, but Russian ballet may be the greatest example. More modern choreographers have worked with people like Cage, but balletic music on the level of Stravinsky just does not seem to occur very often. Another favorite is Daphnis and Chloe.
Diaghilev was not a composer, or a dancer, or a choreographer, or a designer, or a librettist. He was, however, an enormously skilled assembler of a “dream team” to implement his transformative“Étonne-moi!” visions. A rare skill in any field.
All true. I cannot think of a single company today in modern or ballet to have such a leader. They are mainly older former dancer choreographers now.
Last night I heard Jim and James Salestrom (father and son) on 11th & Grant, a local production of MTPBS.
Fabulous!
Yes, not many people are aware he was a genius musician as well. This is one my favourite instrumental pieces, played by him.
I’m still upset by his untimely and very premature passing. What a story behind that one, sadly.
My choice is ‘Nature’s Way’ by Spirit. First Earth Day anthem.
