Timeless
okay, so you’ve inspired me to put Genoa Keawe on while I surf the food boards. Although we haven’t been back to Hawaii for 12 years now, we used to go pretty frequently and stay a month at a time (mainly on Oahu, but did some island hopping). We spent quite a few evenings listening to her at various venues & her family members after she passed.
Since I think I remember that you’re in Kauai (true?), my favorite story was going to the hotel that had the touristy sunset torch lighting ceremony (this was pre-Iniki) and listening to a father/son duo play some great traditional stuff. When the son did some table hopping on their break, we discovered that he had lived 2 blocks from us in Brooklyn for years before returning home to be with his elderly parents. Surreal, discussing local Brooklyn restaurants with him in that setting.
Steve…I live about a mile up the hill from that hotel…its name was Coco Palms. The musician (father) was named Larry Rivera…I knew him…he died recently.
Cool. Looks like a backyard.
