What are you baking? Oct 2023

Chocolate orange cake with yogurt, cocoa and finely diced orange chocolate bar. The cake also has the zest of an orange added to the sugar and a little orange extract. For the glaze, I juiced and strained an orange and added chocolate, sliver of butter and a drop of Lyles. A little crème fraîche and strawberries from FM were a nice addition. This was adapted from Emma Duckworth’s “ Chocolate Orange Loaf” , which was originally in a 9 x 5 loaf, halved it fit perfectly in the 5 cup Lotus mold.

How are you still getting FM strawberries in October in the Northeast? (Having grown up in California, the long growing seasons were the thing I really missed while living on the east coast.)

This showed up in my instagram feed yesterday and I made it for a quick desert last night. My family liked it,

They were also available last year . The weather has been mild and the farm is near the Delaware River which probably contributes to a more temperate climate. They also happen to be very good and I really enjoy small strawberries. We will see if there are any next time! They are most likely Day Neutral Strawberries.

Here in SE PA there’s also been a trend of very late-season strawbs; they were avail via multiple farmers at the farmers market until about three weeks ago. I’m picky about strawberries and I still found them worth buying.

I got some good everbearing strawberries at the Farmer’s market here in toronto on October 4th )…

That lotus mold really makes it look like a fancy dessert.

Every cake I bake in it turns out pretty. I frequently make Rachel Roddy’s Marmalade Cake which has 3T marmalade or jam and 1T marmalade brushed on the outside with a dusting of confectionery sugar. It “glams” the simple cake up rather than the loaf pan as suggested.

Pecan Sandies from The Perfect Cookie, ATK. this is a slice and bake cookie. The texture is of a buttery shortbread. I bake cookies almoxt every week and have started freezing part of the bake for Christmas. Hopefully that will set some time to vake a few specialties.

If there’s any concern they’ll be out of stock by then, I’d also be glad to get and hold them for you (I’m in nyc).

I do also see other brands — Target has nestle butterscotch chips and Kraft caramel bits.

It’s only 2 weeks from now so I hope that they will stick around? But thank you!!

Sourdough with white, whole wheat and a little rye.

And the best part, toast and raspberry jam.

I made caramel apple cookies from Buttermilk by Sam for a fundraiser for one of my student’s with cancer. They are fun and different and I think they will be very well received at the sale tomorrow! My husband, my forever taste-tester, gave them high marks. My only gripe is that it makes a small batch.

Do they last long (I mean around the house after they been baked)? What a nice thing to do, a support team is so essential.

Nothing fancy, but a sour cream apple coffee cake hit the right notes. Used 1-1/2 very large Macouns I picked up in Maine last weekend, and served with a scoop of Tillamook Waffle Cone Swirl ice cream alongside.

I made this in a 9×9" pan vs her suggested 13x9" pan. Came out just fine at 40 minutes baking time.

Ignore the unfortunately named (IMO) blog name.
