Great story! You are def a kindred soul that will drive 40 miles for cake! The honey cake has been on my list for ages - like you I don’t have much of an audience. It’s sort of scary when I make a big cake and my H literally has one bite. That’s it - one bite.

I recently saw this cake, Monastery Cake, in a list of Ukrainian cakes. Looks great but I won’t be attempting it anytime soon.
