wandering about jackson heights and elmhurst

By new do you mean new to you, new to the group or a place that recently opened?

Purposely vague. Any or all.
But since weā€™re now in the process of narrowing it down, preferably not mammal-centric. And definitely not Staten Island, though Iā€™d love some great Sri Lankan food.

Why donā€™t you pick somewhere, the group is happy to eat at new and delicious places.

Looking forward to it ā€” seems like I havenā€™t seen you in a gazillion years!

Iā€™m glad we tried both the Valluno and Tolimense tamales. I really liked the ā€œarroz con polloā€ version (the Tolimense); it would make a very good comfort meal for one. La TamalerĆa is something like a Colombian diner; if we wanted to explore more food from that country, weā€™d do better at a full-blown restaurant, particularly one that emphasizes seafood.

And Iā€™m always glad to stop in at 969 NYC Coffee ā€“ at Saregamaā€™s inspiration, recognizing that Jeff and Ike had never tried an onigirazu. Oda, gracious as always, was happy to let the four of us sit down to share a single shrimp onigirazu, cut in four. IIRC, a couple of us got a beverage, too, without incident.

The chicken inasal at Tyang Gelayā€™s Grill was on the dry side, but the laing was excellent. There were lots of other dishes on the menu, and on neighboring tables, that Iā€™d gladly explore over a group meal.

The longish answer:

I spend so little time in NY that I rarely research what would work for a shared group dinner. Iā€™ve had group dinners at Harlem Tavern several times and Asian Bowl. Harlem Tavern was more for the beer than the food. Most of my friends either want a moderate high-end restaurant (Union Square Cafe, Dirt Candy, etc) or they want to go someplace they know theyā€™ll like when I visit (Little Pepper, Taste Good, Baroso, Legends of Taste, Reneeā€™s, Astoria Seafood). If Iā€™m eating alone, my research is for cheap lunches where Iā€™m looking for variety. I usually end up at a Dominican, Guyanese (Singhā€™s), or a bad buffet.

But, if I had to come up with a list quickly, here it is:

I mentioned Sri Lankan so Iā€™d be happy with Spicy Lanka, though thatā€™s neither new nor new to me ā€“ https://spicylanka.net/

You guys are all so much more in tune with NYC restaurants, Iā€™d be happy if someone else did the choosing.
