By new do you mean new to you, new to the group or a place that recently opened?
Purposely vague. Any or all.
But since weāre now in the process of narrowing it down, preferably not mammal-centric. And definitely not Staten Island, though Iād love some great Sri Lankan food.
Why donāt you pick somewhere, the group is happy to eat at new and delicious places.
Looking forward to it ā seems like I havenāt seen you in a gazillion years!
Iām glad we tried both the Valluno and Tolimense tamales. I really liked the āarroz con polloā version (the Tolimense); it would make a very good comfort meal for one. La TamalerĆa is something like a Colombian diner; if we wanted to explore more food from that country, weād do better at a full-blown restaurant, particularly one that emphasizes seafood.
And Iām always glad to stop in at 969 NYC Coffee ā at Saregamaās inspiration, recognizing that Jeff and Ike had never tried an onigirazu. Oda, gracious as always, was happy to let the four of us sit down to share a single shrimp onigirazu, cut in four. IIRC, a couple of us got a beverage, too, without incident.
The chicken inasal at Tyang Gelayās Grill was on the dry side, but the laing was excellent. There were lots of other dishes on the menu, and on neighboring tables, that Iād gladly explore over a group meal.
The longish answer:
I spend so little time in NY that I rarely research what would work for a shared group dinner. Iāve had group dinners at Harlem Tavern several times and Asian Bowl. Harlem Tavern was more for the beer than the food. Most of my friends either want a moderate high-end restaurant (Union Square Cafe, Dirt Candy, etc) or they want to go someplace they know theyāll like when I visit (Little Pepper, Taste Good, Baroso, Legends of Taste, Reneeās, Astoria Seafood). If Iām eating alone, my research is for cheap lunches where Iām looking for variety. I usually end up at a Dominican, Guyanese (Singhās), or a bad buffet.
But, if I had to come up with a list quickly, here it is:
I mentioned Sri Lankan so Iād be happy with Spicy Lanka, though thatās neither new nor new to me ā https://spicylanka.net/

You guys are all so much more in tune with NYC restaurants, Iād be happy if someone else did the choosing.
