So, has anyone stopped shopping at TJ’s due to their shady practices?
Yes. I no longer shop there.
i still shop there.
I rarely shopped there once Wegmans opened up down the road (Burlington, MA). It was always a PITA to get into the parking lot with a Petco and Bed Bath & Beyond in the same lot. Now that BB&B is gone, I’m sure it’s a lot easier.
But I haven’t needed anything in the past 6 months. The only thing I can think I’d go to buy would be their frozen roasted corn, their canned corn (seriously the best canned corn), Triple Gingersnaps, and their 1 lb chocolate bars. Oh…I also get my small cone-shaped coffee filters from them,. So when I do need them, I’ll probably buy 3-4 boxes.
But as for their Trader Joes’ labeled food items? Probably not.
I’ve decided to cut back.
I went to Aldi instead today to get feta, even though I absolutely adore TJ’s Greek feta. It’s the best (and most affordable) feta I’ve gotten stateside.
This Aldi one is made in Wisconsin. It’s fine for its purpose today, i.e. being mixed into baba ghanoush, but it’s nowhere near as good as TJ’s.
And I’m sure most major companies are somehow involved in shady practices. To circle back to an earlier point - cynical as some may find it: that’s capitalism for ya
They also recently discontinued the Greek kalamata olive oil. I really do have fewer reasons to stop in there. I don’t buy frozen prepared food for the most part, the sweets & snacks are mostly uninteresting/irrelevant to me… I think at this point it’s the good prices on cheese that could still get me in the door
Only three companies are trying to overturn the NLRB completely, though.
I get Bulgarian “feta” from a middle east market here (called the Middle East Market). Inexpensive and decent wines and spirits are about the only thing I can’t find elsewhere.
I can find both French and Bulgarian feta at the local international market (great selection of Indian, ME, Korean & Thai products), but I find both too soft for salads.
Fortunately, small coffee filters are relatively easy to get, even #1.
Both Costco and Total Wine & Spirits have good, relatively affordable wine and spirits. I get a lot of name-brand spirits (e.g., Maker’s Mark) from Costco. And if you ever make it down Castro Valley way, Crossroads Market has a great feta selection.
Can’t beat the price on TJ’s No. 2 unbleached filters. Box of 100 is $2.50 or $3.00, I think? I’ve seen reviews where people claim they come apart at the seam, but in the however many years I’ve used them, I’ve never had that happen.
Amazon has a box of 200 for $8.99.
No I’m confused. In this article (gift link) a TJ’s spokesperson says it has not joined the SpaceX lawsuit to overturn the NLRB.
If I remember correctly, (and I might not be) it wasn’t that TJ’s had somehow joined SpaceX’s suit against the NLRB. It’s that one of the arguments they’ve made in one of their fights with the NLRB is the same as SpaceX’s, namely that the NLRB has no constitutional regulatory authority.
That’s what I thought, and that’s what they seem to be denying in that WaPo article. I should re-read it.
RUMOR has it that TJ’s is opening a shop in Butte, Montanny. When pigs fly.
RECALL. Just read this one today. Along with an unfortunate list of ongoing product issues.
Fire hazard. Refund offered. Apparently the entire canister can catch on fire.
Does this apply to all their candles in tins?
The recall only stated the mango candle in this report. But I could have missed previous reports. So if in doubt, I cant imagine TJs not refunding you on a diff candle in the same canister style.
