Trader Joe’s Product Reviews – YEA/NAY/MEH – 2025 Edition

I’m aware
But French yogurt isn’t

So either specify “tart” on the container, or write “Bulgarian style” and not generically “European”

I did toast them (I do the AP ones as well)

I bought them to try, but I’m still puzzled by why they taste so “strong”.

I have some big chapatis I’ll use up, and then maybe I’ll get around to making my own WW tortillas from chapati flour

I assume they just use “European Style” because that’s how Straus does it. (I don’t know if it’s the same producer in the East, but the combo of extra tartness and a looser texture is the hallmark of Straus’s.)

I’ve had Straus’s when I lived in CA.

MEH Chocolate wafer cookies, not sweet, not much flavor, won’t be a repeat for me.

I like chocolate wafer cookies. Thanks for the warning.

You might like them.

As Borat says: They don’t excite (me)

I’m pretty sure Loacker makes the TJ double chocolate wafer cookies. I like that they’re not too sweet.

I like them.
Not too sweet is a positive for me.
Even better from the fridge.

I’ve had those!

Yea: Butter almond thins. These are thin, crispy, and nicely buttery with caramel notes from the brown sugar. Good with a cup of tea. (The only almonds involved are the scattering of sliced almonds across the top.) A bit of a nay on the packaging/handling, though. There’s not even a tab on the box to keep it closed, and despite the plastic tray a lot of them were broken when I opened it.

Another yea for the Meyer lemon cookie thins. Very thin and crisp, with good lemon flavor (though not notably distinctive as Meyer lemon). They worked well in an icebox cake type of concoction. These are packed in two plastic sleeves (like GS cookies), and unlike the butter almond thins, none were broken coming out of the box, though the last several in each sleeve broke apart before I got to them.

And a soft yea for the calamari pieces in olive oil (product of Spain). I figured this was a gamble, and although it’s not as tender as well-cooked squid, it’s not tough or rubbery — decent tossed into a salad. Priced midway between sardines and TJ’s smoked trout. Not sure whether I’ll buy again.

MEH for the Chocolate Almond Spread. Very little nut flavor and just OK chocolate flavor. I got it for free via Buy Nothing, so for free it tastes OK enough.

That is a very decorative tin! How do they taste?

Like calamari! They’re not seasoned other than with salt, so pretty neutral.

Nothing to do with springerle. It’s a play on their popular Jingle Jangle.

My store has been struggling with supply issues for basic stuff like whole milk, never mind the rest. And yesterday, they were doing maintenance on all the freezer cases, which had not been restocked even until this evening. Maybe tomorrow, I hope, because I was relying on them for a few things.

(And today I had an unexpected verbal tussle with someone when I asked if puff pastry was expected to be back in stock, as they usually bring it back for the spring holidays after it goes away around Thanksgiving – the guy brusquely responded “well, you can’t use puff pastry for Passover”, to which I replied, “but you can for Easter, and my question was whether it’s going to be back as it usually is this time of year.” And what I didn’t say but thought, thanks so much for mansplaining Passover to me, buddy.)

Anyway. YEA for the grated Unexpected Cheddar, which I picked up because they were out of the block (first time ever in my experience), but is such a usable format for my favorite cheese.

That seems like a very New York interaction.

Yes, and an incredibly stupid one for the Upper West Side

Was in my local store yesterday and most of the freezer cases on one side of the aisle were empty, maybe freezer maintenance is the same time frame for all stores.
Did snag some scallion pancakes, which I haven’t seen (or noticed) in a while. Air fried one and topped it with some soy and an over easy egg. A good quick dinner.

YAY! to the Irish garlic butter chips. Oh my! I really liked the blue cheese ones but these surpassed my expectations. My only regret is that I purchased two.
