If its dark outside, I prefer to use the butane camp stove and a headlamp – just seems a bit safer than wood fired flame.
Funny story – I was cooking on my rocket stove about two weeks ago, when some “Karen” came over to complain about the smell of smoke. I told her it wasn’t a “no burn day” so I was within the law, then I asked her if she wanted a burger. She left in a huff.
I eat a fair amount of canned tuna, and am always looking for tastier brands. I’ve found a direct correlation between taste and price.
At the Lidl near my gym, I found a jar of Lidl-brand Spanish tuna filets in olive oil (I always buy tuna in water but the olive oil-pack is so delicious) for ten dollars US. It’s a big jar and so far the tuna is exceeding my expectations; my only concern is getting through the jar before it spoils. I’ve been topping it off with olive oil every time I take some fish out, to keep it 100% covered, so that should help keep it super fresh. Another plus of eating oil-packed tuna is it’s way more filling. I eat a can of water-packed tuna at a time when I eat it (I just drain if necessary, and dump it onto a big salad, usually) but I don’t really wish to eat that much oil-packed tuna. I can, but I don’t necessarily want to. It’s too rich.
In general, I haven’t found Lidl to be a treasure chest of secret, inexpensive treasures, but finding even one regular item there that saves me money would be a win. I go to the gym 5x/week so it’s no “special” trip to source even one regular part of my diet there.
My neighbor dropped off some small(ish) grapefruits as she had a few extra from her tree. I was quite happy to get any size grapefruits and thanked her. She told me “more to follow”!!
I check the grocery flyers each week and I noticed the cost of certain items are now coming down. The peanut butter I like used to be on sale for $6/kg but I often see it on sale for $5/kg. I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen it on sale for that cheap. One store in Ottawa has the big 907 g bags of Italpasta on sale this week for $0.98 a package. I haven’t seen it that cheap in 3 or 4 years. The store that has it on sale doesn’t have any locations in my neighbourhood but I am contemplating going on a bus ride this weekend if time permits. Unfortunately downtown Ottawa has lower income earners yet the only grocery stores in this neighbourhood are the expensive ones. Someone on the Ottawa subreddit mentioned recently that they heard our discount grocery store Food Basics will be opening a location in downtown Ottawa at some point but I’m not holding my breath. The neighbourhood this store will be opening in is a food dessert. There are a few apartment buildings in the area already and tons more going up as well as an area just to the north that is being redeveloped to house a new library and NHL hockey arena but there aren’t any ammenities in the area. A former coworker lives in the area and when we worked together I asked her where she did her banking, grocery store shopping, drugstore shopping, etc and she said it was a long walk or a bus ride to get to most of these places.

Careful of any medication interactions! Just a heads up…
My roomie cannot eat grapefruit, period because of his statin (which he does not take regularly). Squirt soda pop okay, grapefruit juice, no. Our avocado and grapefruit section salad is out for him.
@Desert-Dan This new “14 recipes using potatoes” post by a favorite cooking author I follow got me thinking of your overstock. Maybe a new idea or 2 for you there.
I got some breakfast sausage links on clearance. Here is my plan…
(1) Bake the sausage links until done.
(2) Make up some home made spinach pasta dough and roll out thin.
(3) Wrap the spinach pasta dough around the sausage links.
(4) Make up a bechamel sauce and pour over the pasta/sausage rolls in a baking dish.
(5) Top with a little cheese, cover with foil and bake it off (kind of like lasagna).
There are differing opinions on this, but I don’t care for the texture of fresh pasta that has not been boiled (briefly) before baking. IMO the eggs/gluten in the pasta don’t set properly when cooked at a low starting temp. I would suggest parboiling your noodles and then proceeding with your wrap/sauce/bake plan.
Here’s another idea – lasagna roll-ups. The spinach goes into the filling, instead of into the pasta. But no reason you couldn’t do both, and add the sausage to the filling mixture.
