A few new Ossington places have opened. None have had rave reviews and they’re of course Ossington-priced. Report back on your food adventures today.
Tough location. I don’t know how Andreas has been able to keep Little Anthony’s and Volos running (same intersection) all these years.
I suspect AloBar won’t last that long on York.
Sometimes I wonder if they don’t know how to promo in that area. They have three high end hotels within walking distance…
Offer free lunches to the hotel concierges. If you have to pay for advertising, why not hit your target?
I would think most of these restaurants already send comps to the hotel concierges downtown, or host them at some events. My friend was a concierge at a Hilton property in NYC 30 years ago, and I was often her plus 1 on various comped gift certificates for dinner.
I think Volos has done fairly well by being a Greek restaurant that doesn’t offer pork, so it works for business clientele who avoid pork for customary or religious reasons, while keeping the salads and beef on the menu for the salad people and the meat eaters. They also keep some plain stuff on the menu that works with fussy or plain eaters.
Volos is the place I chose when my half Greek 3rd cousin who is gluten free was staying at the Hilton on points. He only stays at Hiltons LOL. Lifetime top level of points status so he isn’t giving those perks up.
I’m not sure Frenchie inside the Hilton has been doing that well or serving good food, so that also probably helps the bottom line at Volos and Little Anthony’s.
Needed a quick local dinner, so we headed to Mi Mi, our first visit in a long time. The food remains delicious and the service by the hostess always warm and welcoming.
Pho Dac Biet (#21, Special Assorted Beef) remains a favourite, with thinly-sliced beef, beef balls, tripe, and tendon.
Equally yummy is their version of Bun Bo Hue (#12, Hue-style beef soup).
I am trying the Pork Chop with Rice and the House Special Banh Mi at Beyond Banh Mi tonight.
I was happy to see it’s possible to place pick-up take-out orders directly through Square.
Beyond Banh Mo’s pork chop and rice, $17.99 CAD before tax.
House Special banh mi with pork belly, cold cuts and páté, $11.99 CAD before tax. (I prefer the ones at Rustle and Still and the now closed Saigon Snacks but this was quite good)
I will order in person another time. Square (the Point of Service company) didn’t pass along my order to the restaurant, despite taking my payment and sending a confirmation.
The 2 fellows working made my order quickly, in less than 10 minutes.
This place is pretty good. I would go back , but there are also a dozen other Vietnamese restaurants I would like to try.
