Thank you!
Currently finishing up another delightful meal at Tori Jiro. A couple new things we tried this afternoon:
Salmon and escolar sashimi ($9 each)
They come with fried onion floss and wasabi. The onion brought a nice pop to the pieces. The salmon was our favorite on the plate.
Seared mackerel, which they do with a blow torch at your table. Wonderful fattiness and a firm texture on this. The ponzu, wasabi, and scallions are a perfect foil. ($14)
I could get a couple plates of the mackerel and some rice and cucumbers and walk out of there a happy woman!
I am very happy with my move from greater Boston to mid-coast Maine until I see pictures like this. I would love both of those plates!! Just gorgeous.
Don’t neglect Formosa Taipei…
We had the opportunity to get back to Tori Jiro this past Saturday afternoon. We had a quiet chunk of time at the bar and enjoyed our food and drink. I noticed they don’t have specials written on the glass by the grill station anymore; you need to check with the server for them. They’ve added some more chicken part options to the menu, however they were out of most of them on our visit (chicken liver, cartilage, and skin, for example). They did have the gizzard engawa, which I tried and enjoyed (they described as the “end of the gizzard” - since they were out of the gizzard itself, I couldn’t compare them).
I started with some sake, Maboroshi.
Then we moved on to grilled scallops.
And grilled squid.
The “Addicting Cucumbers”
Then we moved on to skewers from the grill. Here are shishito peppers, shiitake mushrooms, okra, pork belly, and tsukune (chicken meatball).
A break for some carbs (curry fries) and some grilled unagi (one of my favorites in the area!).
More pork (more belly and some jowl. I liked the texture on the jowl, slightly more chew/crunch than the belly).
And a final plate of the chicken gizzard engawa, hangar steak, and more tsukune and shiitake.
I finished off my meal with a highball made with Nobushi whiskey, which was a perfect summer sipper.
There were a few occupied tables while we were there of folks coming in for lunch (a lot of ramen and curry bowls) and some delivery orders getting picked up. Afternoons tend to be on the quiet side when we’ve been, with things picking up once the dinner hour arrives. We’re looking forward to going back soon!
Everything looks great. Thanks.
