Tipping on Counter Service

Off topic: thank your for being a CASA volunteer. I was one for 12 years while working full-time. I resigned when I adopted a 7 year old from foster care when I was 51. Being a CASA was the best thing I ever did in my life until I adopted my son.

On topic: I tip 20% for counter service at locally owned places that I value and want to stay in business. A few bills in the cup when it’s a national chain and they hand me coffee (that doesn’t happen often, since I make coffee at home or get from local shops).

Not if this thread is any indication.

I think the general sentiment in this thread and when you google for polls is that tipping is just out of control.

what I learned in 2025 is don’t bring up tipping on Toronto Food Reddit.

I think Trinkgeld or Pourboire are better words, although they tend to be a round-up that’s a smaller amount than a North American-style tip.

Uni.

How about getting the moderators to move this thread out of Boston/New England into something more general?

Or delete it if they won’t.

Responders have absolutely beat it to death by now and it shows no sign of stopping

I had lunch today at a branch of Kura Sush, a “conveyor belt” sushi chain. No humans were visibly around except the manager who led me to my seat. Dishes moved by on the conveyor belt, you cleared empty ones by inserting them into a slot, where they would be added to your check (each dish was $4.10, a very good deal). Payment was by phone scanning. The bill had a tip line. i added $1.50, a little more than 15%. What would you do?

I would do what you did.

I vary rarely go out to eat . When I did it was 20 % or more depending upon service.. Food is secondary.
Tipped the mail lady over Christmas. She was very appreciative.

We don’t have mail delivery where I live in Canada anymore. I miss it. We pick our mail up at a communal metal mailbox with around 30 mail slots roughly 500 yards away.

I tip the newspaper carrier at Xmas. He appreciates it.

If you search for “tipping” on Trip Advisor Italy, you’ll find countless of threads with about 100-200 posts each.

Yep. I used to double check or ask on a TA forum, before visiting various countries to see what tipping culture was like in various European countries that were newer to me, before visiting. I have visited France half a dozen times, and Germany and Austria over 20 times, so I was confident enough that I was doing it the way many locals or my family would.

I wasn’t as sure about Portugal and Spain, or Czech Republic, which I’ve visited less. Interestingly, in Czech Republic, we were asked for some money by some young boys so they would not scratch or key my cousin’s car. That was more of a pay off or a surcharge, than a tip for a service, but it was memorable!

I believe I also read up on tipping before I visited Japan.

I think that’s called extortion

You’re very welcome. I’ve muted many threads I don’t care for showing up in my feed

I lived on tips for years so take my thoughts on this with a grain of salt. But I tend to tip more when I think I have gotten great value.
Conveyor belt? I figure it goes to the bussers, hopefully. I would probably tip like you did if it was less than what I had been charged at other places. If it was at a similar price point to full service sushi restaurants I would probably tip around 5-10%.
YMMV.
