The NYC Bagel Thread

coulda sworn there was an LA bagels thread

maybe it was an article

eta this one

Nice, thanks. I remember seeing that article. I’ve heard that Layla Bagels on the west side, with heavy involvement from Hell’s Kitchen alum Sammi Tarantino, are really good too. But will be tough to beat Courage.

Read at your own peril

I really like PopUp.

Basic no-frills bagel-shop

Not a single place on the UES which aligns with my experience.

“Fluffy” is not a positive bagel descriptor

Well looking at the pictures of the editorial staff that put this list together, they all look like they’re in their 20s so wouldn’t likely have experienced a good bagel growing up and would not recognize a proper chewy bagel if a giant one rolled over them. Proudly puffy?

Many NYC bagel joints are sandwich joints. Those bagels are slightly smaller and less interesting than a loaf of 1960s wonderbread.
Big fat wads of uninteresting dough. Most of the ones in the 30s near Penn.

For take away bagels with nothing on them, in Chelsea on 8th, Brooklyn and NYC.
Haven’t tried Tompkins or been to Russ & in years. It’s always crowdy when I pass by.

The true test of a bagel for us is Pumpernickel, not Russian with raisins.
Molasses and cocoa powder give them their culture. Pump (dark rye), ww, and a bit of BF make up the basic recipe.
Fairway used to have great ones before the purge.

Cinnamon raisin are hazerai, trayf. An abomination. Like pineapple pizza. But for some …

I just read the NYT story about Apollo Bagels’s woes of being “too popular” and I was—to put it mildly—astonished to see that each bagel order is boxed up in what looks like a plastic container. Is this true?!

I’m a bit curious how continued expansion will affect Pop-Up bagels

If you buy just a bagel, no. But if you buy a bagel that’s dressed up like this …

… then yes.

@DaveCook Thanks for quelling my concerns. I saw a photo of someone eating a fairly simple bagel with cream cheese and tomato from a box and my head exploded!

This looks like a straightforward bagel with cream cheese — in a box

Oh dear :exploding_head:

I think your upset would be better directed on their social media or emailed to them — might make a difference

I’m more upset about the size of the holes in that bagel than the box. Whatever happened to dense and chewy?

I think they’re supposed to be somewhat Montreal in style.

So were Black Seed (sort of) and at least when they started, and were then very good, they weren’t as airy. They’ve gone the airhead route since, though.

I must’ve gone too late. I had one and thought it was meh.

Of course, I dislike Montreal bagels, so there’s that.

I have no direct experience but the photos show what looks like one of the ubiquitous paper supposedly compostable container. If that makes any difference.
