The decline of Chowhound, by the numbers

Food talk Central. Very los angeles oriented. Great info for their restaurants. Very little going on other than that.

Mr. Sullivan misses the point. All the Chowhound offshoots were started by disgruntled former Chowhound users. If there’s one thing that they all share in common, it is that they know what not to do to a food forum, the very thing that caused them to leave Chowhound in the first place. I.e. They know not to mess up the conversations.

Other than eGullet, I am not aware of any site that has a substantial server bill to pay or a full time/ part time staff to keep. So there is no pressure to come up with loads of revenue.

Hungry Onion uses off-the-shelf software. Unlike Chowhound who uses its own proprietary software, and thus can do whatever they want, the developers who make our software have tens of thousands of paid corporate and free users of their software. The software developers most likely works with members on these changes and tries to adjust plans and improve the experience based on feedback . Imagine the uproar if the developers change their software like the way Chowhound did.

There’re benefits to a smaller site. Its a closer knit circle.

WOW Linda… I have now realized your passion, not only for food, but for those of us that are here with you!
Thank you!

John,
Because of you, I have at the ripe age of 64 put your city on my bucket list to visit and invite you along when I visit to discover the food of your daily routine. This is on my list including Reno Nevada.( to mention one)
Your observations here are really valued like Linda’s.

Not really. Changing technologies have pretty much killed off many forums (not just food ones) with people migrating to Facebook and/or Twitter to have their needs met. Even my once active village community forum died about three years back. I’ve never had an interest in using Facebook or Twitter so am, obviously, missing out on what might be being discussed there - but I can happily live with that. And, of course, my own interests evolve. I can think of a couple of niche forums (neither food related) on which I used to spend a lot of time but no longer do so. In one case, that’s because my interest changed but it’s sense of community is well established - they organise an annual conference with guest speakers and a social get-together on the two evenings either side of the “event”.

Fuck. Fuck and Double Fuck.

I read your post an hour after you posted. Melanie’s post is still there. As are other critical ones.

The CH post links to their “Most memorable thread” thread. And quotes someone liking my “View from the Kitchen Window”, including my original photo. And that quote comes from the now locked thread criticising how the “Top 50” posters had been selected. So, the buggers are happy to use my photo but not to include the negative comments I posted on the “Top 50” thread (which was about the destruction of the community that prompted me to start the “Kitchen Window” thread) or, indeed, the negative comments I sent to the senior guy when I got his “Top 50” email.

Still there this morning.

Haven’t had time to read their links, but interesting that they posted this on “General Community” vs. Site Talk where they did the 20th, as Melanie noted. But it’s because Site Talk is hidden, and they want to pat themselves on the back in public.

John. Of course not. Because everything is Happy-Happy-Joy-Joy in CH Land.

Many of you have already “gotten the memo,” but for those who haven’t:

I was a member on CH (under a different name) and decided after receiving word of its impending exit to look here. I read a few threads not so much to find answers to culinary questions but to gather a sense of the site and the way(s) members act. This site seems more grounded and sensible than CH. IMO two things were major contributing factors to CH’s demise: certain prolific posters who were simply hard, very hard, to understand, and, likely spurred by such posters, a perceived need to ratchet up the snark. I have concluded that if people say things that are factually wrong it will always be important to set the record straight with accurate facts, but if people just go off on rhapsodic but nonsensical activity, it is best simply to refrain from engaging. I look forward to this new to me site and getting comfortable with how it works. I have already noted many familiar CH names.
