The decline of Chowhound, by the numbers

P.S. I can’t wait to respond to Pat’s Email tonight when I have time to pull it together. :smiling_imp:

That’s odd. I use Adblock Plus, and the site’s clean as a whistle for me. See?

That was way back then. I have no idea what’s like now.

This is really the tragedy. I still find plenty on Chowhound to interest me, particularly on the Home Cooking and Manhattan boards. I’m perfectly content to split my time between several food sites - there’s no single one that gives me “everything.” But I really hate that dissent isn’t tolerated, and that wrists are constantly slapped for what I think is pretty minor bitchiness and spatting. (I don’t mind a little minor bitchiness and spatting, to be honest.) Plenty of other websites survive with fractious commenters that often call out “management” and one another. Gothamist and Eater come immediately to mind.

What, you didn’t know that the 22nd anniversary is a venerated milestone?:sweat_smile::confused: The traditional gift is a steaming pile.

A few months before the 2015 redesign, I received a two week suspension from Marssy (sp?) for I-can’t-remember-what perceived infraction. I do recall that it came as a final straw, and that I wouldn’t have dreamed of groveling to the khaki-and-sunglasses-clad leaders of what had become an online banana republic.

I have a lot more respect for sites that allow civilized discussion and critisism about their operating method. A critique often allows more of a chance to reflect and grow than a glowing review. The constant airbrushing of threads into a shadow of the actual conversation is shallow and just continues the poisonous path.

I gave some very detailed and thoughtful responses to the 2015 changes. They were ignored, but I stayed. Then I mentioned HO a few times and was banned. I did not grovel for reinstatement and have not returned since (except for links from HO

So just as eGullet didn’t allow mentions of CH or other CH offshoots, CH is not allowing mention of other food message boards. Wow.

Keep in mind Jim sold out then they sold out to CBS…DEEP POCKETS…How much did Les M get?.. ( a nice Jewish boy from where I own property; I am Jewish and own property in the town he grew up in)
They are not about people as we are, after I was pushed aside… I went with the people, not CBS employees…

I stayed, too. Then we got tons of spyware and virus-laden pop-up ads on every discussion page. And the photo uploader broke. And they just couldn’t get it together.

Nope. Just nope.

This thread has been quite interesting to me. It mentions people I never knew or even knew of. As Plotniki once told me, if you weren’t kicked of (forum X), you weren’t worth bothering with. True then, true now.

I need to say that beside the “daily bread” contact of forum dialog we enjoy on whatever boards, we have made many flesh and blood friends, international, cross country and local, who enrich our lives and often grace our table. Not CBS nor lower level bureaucracy can take away these sweet people. Not a few are close enough to qualify as those you’d call in the middle of the night if in crisis. For this and these, we are thankful.

I had forgotten about the virus pop-ups and the photo uploads being broken.

Exactly who are you calling “sweet”? :innocent:

A handful of Bay Area posters…
btw, if you want to qualify, I need your cell number. :grinning:
