I think you are saying they will send keys to the worst room first, and your room should be better if you turn up at 10 or 11 PM. This situation occurs frequently for me when I am traveling from the US west to east coast, and I wonder if I should check in before I get to the hotel.
OTOH, when I check in in person, I am often told I am getting an upgraded room. I am always skeptical, and think they say that to everyone.
Well being early sometimes gives you the optimum table. This past Wednesday we had a reservation at 7:00. Pretty early dining hour for the French.
