Supermarket Pet Peeves

I was just watching this clip from an episode of “All In The Family” which fits quite well with this topic.

I never noticed how much Sally Tishell looks like Edith Bunker.

Not a supermarket peeve per se, but has anyone noticed how the glue, zipper locks, etc. are now stronger than the packaging materials so that, for example, when you try to separate a zipper lock for the first time, one side just pulls away from the bag. Or you try to open a box with a tab closure, and the layers of cardboard on one side of the lid just peel apart rather than the glue holding the lid closed releases it? And I frequently need to pry up one side of a vacuum seal lid with a screwdriver on a jar to open it.

Yes! I have had to develop all sorts of work arounds…

For the ziplock plastic bags, I’ve given up and just cut them open with scissors and store the contents in real Ziplocs.

Me, too.

YES! This has been driving me crazy for months. They refuse to separate, or open unevenly.

An opposite of that peeve, just now I opened a can of Cento tomatoes with the pull-tab. So much easier than using a can opener. I think only European imports have them yet.

I’ve gotten tomatoes/tomato products with pull-tabs in the grocery for some time now, but I never have paid attention to whether the cans were imported or domestic. Some Campbell’s soup cans are pull-tab and some aren’t. I am very happy when I see pull-tabs. No more opening tins of anchovies with those little keys …

OMG, I remember those lousy keys on canned hams my mom would get when we kids were growing up. They ALWAYS broke off 1/3 to 1/2 of the way around the can and we then had to work on trying to remove the rest of the lid with a manual can opener, which often wouldn’t work either.

Oh dear Lard, YES!

Seriously? For something massing maybe 1 ounce, they have heavy enough tie straps to hold down Fort Knox.

Yes, I consider it a personal triumph.

Yes. I’ve been known to stand there picking at the leftover edges of the foil stuck to the jar to remove it in its entirety.

It never does, so I have my scissors, or a paring knife, at my side before I start opening.

Sometimes I’d try pliers to finish pulling off the metal strip.

Chef Boyardee Ravioli is frequently lunch ( 'Cause I never did get past 13 yrs old) which has a pull tab & learned the hard way that slow is smooth & smooth is fast or you’ll be wearing polka-dot tomato sauce.

And that indestructible plastic packaging winds up in our waterways…

And the metal can be recycled.
