Supermarket Pet Peeves

After I closed it I believe it was merged by another mod.

Thanks.

So of course I had to go today. After all, I had to get mom her tin of Nyakers gingersnaps. And the real chocolate jimmies (aka sprinkles). And jams. And chocolate. And Beignet mix. And syrups. And . . . well you know how it goes.

My trip usually involves olives, anchovies, Branston pickle, McKay’s marmalade, and something new and different. I used to buy wine there, but Total Wine opened a store a few doors down, the next stop before heading to Barnes and Noble. Central Market completes the circle. My mother-in-law always got Nyacker’s, and despite loving them, I have succeeded in avoiding them. Much of our house is furnished in World Market: bookcases, counter stools, a table desk, and end tables. I love it when a really good deal lasts and lasts.

Me, too!

I live in the land of anachronistic liquor laws, so no wine for me. But they do have a good cost\quality balance on everything else they sell.

I merged them

Gimmicky, but I love the idea.

The Cost Plus I frequented in the '70s was on Hawthorne Blvd between Torrance Blvd and Sepulveda. I spent way too much time there.

Absolute freaking madness! I ventured into my usual grocer today to pick up the things I forgot from my trip 2 days ago. Being 3 days before Christmas, I thought I had it made in the shade. NO EGGNOG!! Nothing to make egg nog out of. No pastaurized liquid eggs (I don’t trust the grocers eggs) and the milks, creams and half and halves were scarce. I couldn’t call my egg lady to get extra eggs. I thought I’d be a sweetie and buy my sweetie some egg nog because he loves it this time of year. There was a ton of it at Thanksgiving…Rats! NO body runs out of egg nog!
They did have tons of fresh baked baguettes this year. They had a shortage of them this time last year. Sigh.

Make coquito instead. BOOM.

I just saw Sara Moulton on PBS. She let a pint of Haagen Dazs thaw overnight in the fridge to use as emergency egg nog.

HEB has a seasonal Creamy Creations (store brand) Egg Nog Joy ice cream. I could see dropping a few scoops into a blender with bourbon and or brandy. Then add a sprinkle of nutmeg. Or just pour a glass of bourbon or make old fashioneds or martinis, all very festive. THEN go to the grocery store, even if you need to Uber.

Oh, she added alcohol. And nutmeg. But I like your festive idea …. Uber for grocery shopping after holiday imbibing sounds right. I haven’t seen any egg nog ice cream locally.’

Pouring a glass of Bourbon is so much simpler.

I grew up with my father’s homemade eggnog at Christmas - he spiked it with Ronrico 151. I think he wanted us kids to fall asleep and stay out of his hair. DH bought a quart of eggnog last week at our supermarket and a flask of Captain Morgan. It was vile stuff.

So after braving the farmers market this AM, we stopped at a local drive-through dairy-type place that also does soft-serve. (Ice cream at 11 AM–the perks of being a grown-up.) My wife wanted drinking eggnog, but all they had was pints of ice cream. It was only later that I thought we should have bought the ice cream and let it melt.

I especially hate it when this happens:

Curious what store that actually was, there is no WF on Queen Anne. Closest are Interbay & SLU.
