Supermarket Pet Peeves

The world changed when they allowed lawyers, doctors, and pharmaceutical companies to advertise.
Now we’re cursed with things like that incessant and infernal Jardiance ad where I’m always deciding which of the vacant eyed dancers is most likely to be a Jim Jones follower :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

When I graduated law school, lawyers were not permitted to advertise. Ditto MDs. And the incessant commercials for prescription drugs. - just tonight I saw one for a semaglutide - the guy was yammering about donuts, then they showed him with the injection pen dosing himself.

I was absolutely flabbergasted when I moved here and saw lawyers advertising on TV. Or the amount of drugs being pushed all day long.

Hint from this lawyer: I’d never use a lawyer that advertises on TV. And I wonder what MDs do with patients who demand what they see in TV. The pressure must be … unpleasant.

Got a World Market nearby? That is where I get big jars of capers and many other goodies.

HEB stocks medium sized cans of peeled tomatoes, Mutti, in the Italian section on one aisle and large cans of Cento, regular and San Marzano, in tomato-ville on the next aisle. Until I figured it out, it irked me.

It wasn’t allowed when I was called to bar in Canada 20 years ago. Buffalo was ahead of us.

The only World Market I see is a furniture store. Does it have another name, or can you please share a link? Thank you!

It’s the same store. It sells imported furniture, home decor, clothing and foods. https://www.worldmarket.com/c/food-and-drink/shop-all-food-and-drink/?store=store117
I’m still using oven mitts and potholders I bought at an Oakland World Market over 15 years ago.

Back in the '70s and '80s it was called Cost Plus and was a marvelous jumble of worldwide military surplus and funky imports at rock bottom prices. I miss that a lot, but it matured beautifully into its current iteration.

They’re great to explore for imported food goodies and jewelery, besides housewares, baskets and furniture.

I love the World Market at this time of year (it’s frighteningly close). Lots of chocolates, small jars of jams, great selection of teas and coffees, etc. I’ve been known to make up whole gift baskets from my purchases there.

The San Francisco store was the flagship store, wasn’t it? I was at that one in the mid '70s and loved it.

I miss grocery stores being open all night. Before the pandemic the Wal-Mart and Meijers near me were 24/7 but no more. I know there’s a good reason this is true but I have sleeping problems and gas stations are, well I’ll just say gas stations.

It was nice to know they were open all night … I’m so old I remember when they were closed on Sundays.
