Supermarket Pet Peeves

Don’t think we need to be overly parochial here, since it’s a food forum, rather than a language or Mensa discussion.

It does bother me in the workplace, especially misspellings on professional resumes, blatant errors in company wide emails, or worse yet, press releases.

It is a peeve of mine to see it in educational settings as well. I’ve come to realize that brains all work differently, and some very bright, and creative folks struggle with language. I’ve noticed this quite often in highly scientific minds too.

Ok, now I’m going to fret there’s an error of some sort in my little lecture. Apologies in advance, if so…

Food fora are interesting as we have mixed languages involved, both with respect to the food itself and the participants? Color or colour? What do Americans do with all those extra unused 'u’s? grin Lots of people working in their second or fifth language (with my undying respect).

Good point @Auspicious - I sometimes put the extra u’s to work out of whimsy. Yes, about the folks who speak many languages, they have my utmost respect also. I worked with many people who were trilingual or more, as were most of our medical writers at my last real job. Able people indeed.

Somebody that blocks the parking lot waiting for a person that is unloading 500 dollars of groceries even though there are other places available a relatively short walk away.

I see peeled/unpeeled used confusingly, too. To the point where I start second-guessing myself.

Personal hatred here for voila being pronounced, and written, “walla”. Cringe.

One could have fun imagining Julia Child joking:

The head of my (large company) HR department would always end her emails with Thank you for your ‘patients’.
I was embarrassed by it. I kept waiting for someone higher up to correct her. And yet it didn’t happen. She was let go after a few years to make way for someone else. Guess HR scares a lot of people off🙂

Oh yes, one of the worst, but so funny in a way too :upside_down_face:

Oof, that’s bad.

My boss, who was a director, couldn’t write her way out of a paper bag. She’d make me stand in her office when writing an email, and laboriously word by word, ask me how to write it. She also wrote things like inner office mail, rather than inter office, and insure, rather than ensure. I basically asked her what she wanted to say, and offered to write it for her. Would have been a much better use of my time.

Since I had access to all employee files, as well as complete access to the entire payroll system, I reread her resume and CV - no more than 2 years employment anywhere, overpaid, with extreme title inflation, to say the least. I guess it took about 2 years for companies to figure out her MO, and get rid of her. Worst boss EVER!

What is that? I retired recently and know nothing about this 6 AM thing.

These days 500 dollars of groceries is a package of toilet paper and a bottle of hand sanitizer.:mask::angry:
Seriously, though, I’m amazed at how little is in my cart when I spend $100 at Costco–nuts, OTC drugs, and TurboTax can add up quickly.

Dang Evelyn, are you hoarding TurboTax?

Ah, the viola! The best friend of one of my best friends is a viola player, and thus I know through him that viola jokes are kind of the Polish joke of the classical music world.

For example ( or I guess I should say WALLA):

If only that were a Mantra nationwide.

Just stopping by to offer “props” to Kroger for its pandemic shopper accommodations. The one-way aisles that are now cleared of product obstructions are, to me, a huge improvement over the clutter of the recent past. Queuing signage at checkouts is simple and clear too.

Not so enthused about the outdoor queues created when the corporation decided to limit occupancy to half capacity allowed by local fire laws. (standing in 40 degree temps with 35 mph Spring winds is just unpleasant)

Oh - my husband too!! He goes nuts!!!

what a treat. I no longer go to my local Stop and Shop. They still have all kinds of stuff in the aisles which forces you next to someone. Even another market which has been doing pretty well has it’s small aisles cluttered with people stocking the shelves.
