Try the Bread Alone Health Bread. Im not a fan of their other loaves. I always have a loaf of it in my freezer. Toast before making sandwiches or not. Its grainy seedy and not sweet. I love it with smoked salmon, ham or liverwurst or my favorite, sliced tomatoes and HB egg with mayo. My husband with PB. Just forget about Daves….its so sweet, a diabetic should be scared, and wet too - and forget about supermarkets generally the instore baked item slack substance.
Im out in Ohio right now and there are more artisanal offering every time we come, from german/central european and modern bakers. Lots more offerings with whole grain and seeds, dont give up on your local places or demand a square loaf shape!
Like others, apparently, I’ve been trying lots of breads in the past few years because of the discontinuation of Aldi’s Pane Turano. Looking specifically for a sour dough bread a few months ago I came across the Rustik Oven breads (HEB, Kroger, WM here that I know of). I only recently discovered they also have a Pane Italiano and a Hearty Grains and Seeds.
All three have 0 grams sugar.

Went looking for the Pane Italiano the other day on a very rare personal trip to a grocery store - the bread aisle was almost completely barren. Houstonians panicked over a cold front with rain and freezing temps at the same time last weekend (hard freeze predicted - here that means mid 20s). No one here has any idea how to drive on icy roads.
Hopefully restocked someday soon.
My first experience with a bread of that type was the Seeduction bread @ WF many years ago, no longer available locally, apparently. I loved it toasted and buttered for breakfast since I don’t like ‘pastry’, french toast, or sweetened cereals, etc., for breakfast. I loved all the grains and seeds but yes, it was on the sweet side, but not too sweet.
You might enjoy Aldi’s bistro bread, which is a sourdough that comes in plain and seeded, and may just be our favorite supermarket bread these days. Is the Pane Turano discontinued indefinitely?
I’ve seen the Rustik loaves at our local Giant and was tempted… before the bistro bread at Aldi showed up ![]()
Bistro Bread is good and will be on my Aldi shopping list, but I don’t get there very often. I still miss Pane Turano (I don’t get to TJ’s very often at all - it’s been about 3 years - but I remember I liked the Aldi bread better).
I have scored a loaf of Rustik Italiano but haven’t decided yet whether it will be a regular purchase. It is certainly not as good as Pane Turano but it is more readily available to me.
