St Augustine Fl help

Wait 20 minutes for fried chicken? My heart be still! That means pan-fried, so much better than deep fried. And pan gravy! I remember when waiting 20 minutes for fried chicken was standard in the South.

I don’t recall pan gravy but the chicken is delicious! Pretty good hushpuppies too but imo, the best hushpuppies are in nc.

Agree on the hushpuppies.

Work took me to Jacksonville last week, so on the way home I slipped out to O’Steens for a late lunch.

It was worth the detour. $20 for lunch, but its oh so good (and one of the waitresses recognized me and mentioned i hadnt been there for a minute…it had been a few years!)

I’ve heard great things about it

If you haven’t had it, the fried chicken is worth the 20-minute wait. we usually pair it with a large order of shrimp.

The 9 pc shrimp is enough to leave me waddling happily to the car!

Its fantastic

Just there this week…we ate at Castillo, in the Renaissance across from Ripleys.

Food was delicious, and dinner with drinks for two of us was a little over $100 with tip. I had duck confit and it waa crispy and golden as it should be. My rep said his steak was on point too.

Service was immaculate as well.

The new Hiton Sparks hotel next door, however, is worth the PSA. Shady stuff with deposits, $20 a night to park, no hot water for a shower, and shitty Folgers for breakfast. Theyve put lipstick on the pig that was a sketchy Comfort Inn but it’s still a pig.

Back to o’steens, no wait this time of year, that will change as we get closer to thanksgiving. Fried chicken on daily special, not as good as I remember it, maybe they make it ahead of time as there was not the usual 20 minute wait for the dish. Still, the fried shrimp plate was fantastic and well priced.

Heading to the Drunken Horse on Saturday. And if you like French Bistros check out https://www.lanousta.com/
It in an old home that was owned by Thomas Jefferson’s granddaughter. The chef is from Marseilles and trained at Cordon Bleu.

Not sure we will be making it up to St Augustines, but we expect to spend a few days near Merritt Island/Canaveral/Cocoa in January. Any suggestions in that area or not to far north or south? Will be heading to S Florida afterwards for a bit.

Not sure where to situate this, but this seemed like as good a spot as any

Minorcan clam chowder is the freaking bomb.
My beloved O’Steens makes a stellar version of it…and the claim to the best is a hotly contested issue.
