SICILY..dining in 2023

Yes, yes to SCALA in PortoPalo di Capo Pessaro…wrote about that, with pics, from 2023 report. No foreigners, oral menu recited by waiter, Italian only. Order lobster a day in advance, and Ricci as well…

So you’ve been that that area!!! Local non-fancy places are great for us…and will will have a car during that week while we stay at Silva Suri, which has the same ownership (or had, last year) at the wonderful B&B where we spent about 5 nights in Ibla, SABBINIRICA. Perfect in every way (save some steps which were difficult for partner back then)… so have high hopes for Silva Suri which offers dinners on site.

We went to Marzamemmi and while it is very picturesque, the central piazza seemed given over to tourists. But at least two well-respected food shops featuring all local specialties and focusing on more tuna products than you could imagine…

I brought home a jar of tuna pesto with pistachio and I hope to get there again and buy a case–that is how great it was. I am heading to the point when I do not want to do much labor intensive cooking at home anymore, so those jarred pestos, etc are a real find for me!!!

Sometimes too much research if a waste of time…surely hotel can recommend someplace local, or we can take their free shuttle to Siracusa… (end of trip, while staying near Fanusa)

Although Don Camillo has gone down in tourist reviews, I cannot believe it is that bad…who knows…will take it on the fly…

I have not made this clear: We have a week at Silva Suri near Marina di Ragusa, with car, and then another three days, at end of trip, near Fanusa outside Siracusa, without car…

Jen, do you have future travel plans?

On another site, I asked this: Lake Garda: I think Lake Como was my least favorite vacation spot of many trips to Italy. Highlight was a meal at La Fagurida above Tremezzo (site of Mussoli’s take down if anyone feels the need to see the memorial) and also a good meal at SlowFood Silvio outside Bellagio. But the entire week there (late September, after driving from Camogli) was… let’s just say it was just to for me…

So: Knowing all that, would Garda (north end) be something I ought to look into? I know you’ve been often and like it very much…was thinking of combo with Dolomiti but this would be June and partner cannot really hike, or even walk far…

Would love to read your tips…this trip could be next June…other possibilities might be Sardinia (never been but might be a shame since water too cold to swim)…

Sorry, I am rambling here…would love to learn why you love Garda, apart from the oil and the lemons!!!

A million thanks for this and for all your impeccable information over the years! erica

Right now we dont have a specifc plan to go back to Italy, tho we will be going to Garda again next July, God willing. Husband speaks at an annual conference held in Gardone sopra, the little old village which is the “parent” of the resort town of Gardone Riviera below. Another Mussolini link - Nearby Salo was the headquarters of Mussolini’s last republic; the buildings still exist and many of the Gardone villas were used by the german officials posted there at the time. I will promise to write a post about this area soon. In terms of other plans, I would very much like to return to Sicily as well as to Puglia and other other parts of S Italy we have never visited, it remains to be seen when this might happen, We enjoyed our early spring apartment rental in venice so much last year, who knows, we might return an head off elsewhere again…off season travel is a must for us (ealy July is off-season in Gardone) these days, I can not handle crowds, heat, or struggles for reservations. Its just not relaxing.

Jen, wish you the very best on your Garda trip.

We leave 28 August for agri near Marina di Ragusa; then Catania; then 12 days Salina…then that agri near Fanusa and then: OKTOBERFEST in Muchen!!! Quite the contrast! Came about only due to connections from Catania via Munich to JFK… Oktoberfest and Dachau…interesting!

Not sure how many more trips I can take with my partner, or, rather, he can take with me)–but so far we are going good…hope to report more by early September!!

Again, you know that you are among THE most helpful contributors here (among others who I will not name now…I think you all know who you are, and to the many I do not “know!:”

Again, thank you!

Bon Voyage! You need to check out the surfing action on the edge of the English Garden, quite close to your hotel in Munich! Look forward to hearing how it all goes!

Got up once on a surfboard in Long Beach, Nassau County, NY…lasted about 2 minutes I can understand the rush! Who knows…

Booked Falke 23 and Spatenhaus am del Opera…for Munich.
