SFBA Favorite Bites, December 2016

I expect there will be lots of contributions, this holiday season. But for me today, it was just the cumin lamb at Sichuan Style, the former King Tsin, tender with a perfect proportion of heat and mala.

Also, I really like the Mexican soups at La Mission on University. Sopa Azteca yesterday was perfect for the chilly weather, and I don’t think I’ve had better Mexican posole, with big chunks of simmered pork.

Chile relleno en nogada from Primavera at the Ferry Building (fried poblano pepper filled with a mix of meat and fruit and topped with a puréed walnut sauce and pomegranates). Ingredient quality, especially of the pepper and meat, and cooking skill shined here— the spicing, use of fruit, and quantity of sauce were more restrained than the other two versions I’ve had (in the Bay Area),

Guacamole toast at Fonda for brunch. Never would have thought a fried egg on top of guacamole and sourdough toast would be good, but it was. Hash browns along side were nothing special. Hadn’t been to Fonda in a while. It was fun. Cheap mimosas, too

Chicken katsu curry with side of kurobuta sausages (Japacurry food truck, sf)

How’s the kurobuta sausage? Different from regular sausage?

I forgot to post that the steamed crab gluttonous rice at Yum’s and the duck leg rice bowl at Kumino’s have been my favorite bites lately.

Sort of like a small juicy hot dog with very good “snap”, not too salty

I had a great woodfire roasted lamb at Kokkari earlier this week.

As you can see, the dining room is festively decked out for the holiday season.

I also had some excellent mezethes at the bar another afternoon. Great selection of wines by the glass too!

Cool to see them rise from the depths of early bad reviews. Any other recent dish recommendations there?

Actually this was the first time I’ve been back since the initial wave of bad reports (almost 2 years), so I haven’t tried anything else, aside from some congee. I guess I’ll try the crispy pork belly or maybe Singapore crab next, or xlb. The crispy whitebait wuxi style and baby pig have disappeared from the menu, sadly.

Thanks! Please post a menu pic if any pages strike you as interesting— it’s breathtaking that a company that spent millions on their restaurant doesn’t even have a menu posted online!

They don’t even post their hours either! They do have a menu posted on opentable, I’ll try to add the link later today

Mission Chinese makes an amazing beef tatare with smoked tomatoes. (Sorry I don’t have a better photo, this is cropped from a bigger picture.)
