Yes, I think that’s the one we went to. ‘Something’ Horse bar nearby?
There’s a White Horse liquor store a few blocks south (it has a branch of the excellent Krispy Krunchy fried chicken franchise).
That wasn’t strange, and I bet it was fun! That is a long way to go for a field trip. I think the farthest we went was to the Audubon Canyon Ranch near Stinson Beach. We were schooled in Oakland and it was a whole long day adventure. Only one stop, and that was when the bus couldn’t navigate the sharp uphill pin turn and we all had to get off and walk a distance uphill to meet it. Our soggy bag lunches for us, all crammed into a big banana box.
It’s been sooooo long. I coulda sworn there was a bar near there with that name. Was the Kingfisher in that area? The mind goes first.
I don’t know. I don’t live in the area–several of my doctors have offices on Telegraph, and I always schedule late-morning appointments so I can swing by Smokehouse for lunch.
You’re likely thinking of this place by DMV:
We have no take one way or another, because in that neighborhood, our choice is:
They moved, physically lifted and towed, the whole Kingfish building from Claremont St. to the current location on Telegraph to make room for new housing. It’s next to the library now.
Long ago and far away…the memories.
I ordered a burger online at calialley.com, and was offered a 20% discount if I logged in. Apparently, ordering online is at a different site from their main one. I signed up. I don’t know if the discount persists for further orders. The burger was great as always, thick, perfectly medium-rare, with excellent seasoned fries.
A Five Guys opened in Emeryville, and I trekked down to try it. “Small burger, medium rare…” “We only do well-done.” Bzzzt. Off to SuperDuper, where the burger was pink and juicy, a few dollars cheaper, and a few calories lighter.
Today’s SF Chronicle surveys hamburgers (might be paywalled):

A favorite of mine, Al’s Big Burger in Albany, tops the list, but only because it’s in alphabetical order. I had a great burger there yesterday, juicy and medium rare, as requested.
ETA: for me, the paywall pops up in Chrome, but not in Firefox.
No Nopa burger on that list ?
I didn’t think it was a bad list, the title was wrong. To say no burgers south of daly City are worth of a best list is just non sense.
I personally don’t like when these lists have so many “pop-ups” that are open at best once a week for half a day, when there are brick and mortars that didn’t make the cut. Maybe they should lump the pop ups into their own category.
What the hell, I was in the area so I decided to try a Five Guys burger, even though they only cook to well done. It was as expected, just an overcooked burger, nothing special at all. The fries were awful. Live and learn.
I finally got the Chron article to open, after a few days. Used Firefox private mode, despite opening a bunch of other stuff on the Chron and a dozen tries, and looking on Apple News+…which usually gets most Chron stuff. Lovely’s made the list, which I have on my list but if I never eat one…BFD. I have tried Lana’s and thought it was good but not great or exceptional but I didn’t get the double cheese, which I can see being better with two smashed patties.
BTW, I don’t do pop-ups or long lines, even if it’s free and delicious. Dislike lines and having to make an “appointment” to get food. Alsofigured out…no I will not starve.

Looks like you might be best off wearing a Hefty bag when tackling that Chili Willy!
I suppose we will agree to disagree about 5 guys.
Despite being well done, the burgers are juicy and full of flavor. The custom toppings, easily ordered online, help by adding extra pickles and both raw and cooked onions, or whatever your pleasure, helps.
The fries are that particular taste when you make fries from fresh potatoes, and i like that taste, even though it means giving up the crispy crunch. The worst sin of 5 guys is the rapidly dissolving bun, but compared to too much bun or not juicy enough, i choose that sin.
While i prefer an actual Hamburger made in a restaurant, or in the case of tonight, in the back yard over my own grill, for fast food chains, it is at the top of my list. I do admit to liking an in n out now and then, as it has similar properties of fresh fries and snappy toppings, but with thinner less satisfying patties, and fewer choices in toppings. In n out is reserved for that slot after 11.30p if i can’t find a taqueria.
I would like to hear which nationally (internationally) available chain is preferred above 5 guys.
