I prefer to tip waitstaff, bartenders, housekeeping, hair/nail salon staff in cash. In fact, my nail place doesn’t even allow tips to be put on a credit card.
Now I can see how this QR code carryon might be convenient for the generations younger than I am who tend not to carry cash, but I don’t like it.
I was annoyed that the Westin in Kauai wanted me to not have my room cleaned, in exchange for a premade breakfast sandwich at their coffee shop, which was a counter in the gift shop.
If I’m spending $400 bucks a night for 4 days in Kauai, I don’t need my sheets changed daily, but I’d like the cleaning staff to stop by and take out the trash, and I would like fresh towels.
I don’t want a 7 buck premade breakfast sandwich for breakfast if 4 nights in Kauai is costing me over $1600 in hotel plus $500+ on transportation and food.
I suggested Westin was trying to cut back on hours available for local staff by offering this Don’t Change the Sheets and Get a Crappy Sandwich Deal, and the staff insisted it was about the Environment.
Did I mention the crappy sandwich would have come wrapped in plastic ? And I probably would have thrown it in the trash, after 1 or 2 bites ?
.
It was better for the Environment that I did not agree to the Crappy Sandwich Deal.
That’s ridiculous. Not the kind of “deal” one should be offered at a $400/night hotel. Or anywhere for that matter.
Same here.
And coffee cups and “sachets”!
I worked for Hyatt and more than a few of the Housekeeping ladies said that they worked for Hyatt because when they worked elsewhere the housekeeping manager would pre-inspect checkout rooms and pocket the tips “to be shared fairly”.
This was back in the late 1980’s, early 1990’s, though.
I tend to tip w cash, face to face, when i can. I want it to go where it belongs.
I’ve heard this too, so maybe the QR code tips are fairer because they can be cross checked with who did what room, what time. Of course they could be skimmed just as easily. What is fair is younger folks often don’t carry cash so then there’s at least a tip option. YMMV.
No daily room cleaning, freshening or even a check up = no tip. The staff has been cut in many of our previously visited sites, that our experience has been the rental is a now a sleep and go.
