SE USA city for remote week where to go explore?

Ahh. I’d assumed the northern one. Never heard of this one. May be too small…

That is exactly what my PIC says about the OBX whenever I bring up the possibility of a late summer beach weekend.

Sounds rather nightmarish, TBH.

Fall in the southeast will carry some risk of a hurricane in September to early October…never a guarantee, but the chance is also never zero (still twitching over 2 in 10 days last year).

Im going to throw an odd one out…Athens GA has a pretty and walkable town center, and its a university town so quite a bit of activity, plus history, culture, and nightlife. Several good restaurants.

Close enough to head into Atlanta or out to the coast for day or weekend jaunts. Will be warm and sticky in early fall, but far enough north to have some crisp mornings later in the season.

Only caveat would be that because its a university town (University of Georgia) football weekends will be very busy and crowded. Football is a religion in the South, and UGA is a major center for it.

Far enough inland to be safe from any direct hurricane impacts (rain and wind but not direct hit)

A colleague lives there…when he worked for me we would base out of Athens for a couple of nights at a time, and its someplace I’d go back to explore for fun

Taking the ferry from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island to Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks is a very different experience from the traffic jams, crowds, and kitsch tourism further north. The island is very walkable/bikeable and there are interesting restaurants, galleries, shopping, but in a village sense, not vibrant urban. Very interesting history and pristine beaches. I’d love to go back to Ocracoke, but not further north. Not what Sasha is looking for!

Savannah was lovely and the historic district would probably fit what you are looking for, but I don’t know if there’s enough there to warrant a full week/two weekends. You can get a good sense of the historic district/riverfront in a day or two. The parts of the city we drove through outside of the historic district were really not that interesting (and it some cases, to be avoided). If you choose Charleston for your full week, you could drive to Savannah for a weekend and get a two-fer, though - that’s what I would do in your shoes.

Yes, Duluth GA

Small, maybe.

But close enough to ATL, that you get the best of both worlds.

A full week and two weekends seems like a lot of time to devote just to downtown. I think a long weekend would cover that easily. Public transport here currently runs infrequently due to staffing shortages. You’ll want wheels.

I would want access to a car to explore areas like West Asheville and to take advantage of access to hikes in Pisgah, visit local farms, easily get to the Grove Park Inn, check out Black Mountain, etc. Unless you’re willing to spring for a lot of Ubers?

Of the places you listed originally, I would choose New Orleans for sure. Nashville second if you enjoy live music.
