In Massachusetts, there very much is not. MA resident in a 20+ year living together but not married relationship checking in!
I’m in awe of anyone who comes to Edinburgh in August without the express purpose of being in The Fringe/The Festivals. The costs of accommodation are indeed eye-watering.
So some places:
For the History:
The Sheep Heid Inn in Duddingston (for a lovely and historic site outside of the city centre)
Cafe Royale (city centre but a lovely venue)
For the scran: (In addition to your choices)
First Coast (I haven’t been in a while since they revamped the menu, but it’s a good local)
Dishoom (Yes, not Scotland only, but nice)
Chennai’s Marina (South Indian and Sri Lankan food, multiple locations)
Fishers in the City (a while since I’ve been so who knows, but Scottish and Seafood)
Some are quite keen on The Canny Man (in posh Morningside where it’s worth looking at the charity shops because POSH)
Twelve Triangles on Easter Road has some cool kitchen stuff happening.
I’m realising that I’m very rarely eating out these days so not as helpful as I could be. Also, my brain is mush right now.
As for navigating the Fringe offerings: Online is painful but one of the main ways if you don’t have the big book. The way I do it is book those shows I know are coming and that I want to see (mostly comedians and burlesque), to go along with friend’s suggestions, to take note of the posters when there (and not trying to escape or dodge everyone to get home/ get to the place I need to go). There’s also Fringe Roulette.
In Fringe Roulette you can:
- Go to the first show someone flyers you for that is close to starting
- see the next show in the same venue, regardless of what you know
- go to whatever free show starts next
etc.
Right now I’m soaking in the relative calm we brace for the onslaught. (I complain, but I have started to appreciate the pleasures of being able to take a lunchtime comedy break or have a day with friends punctuated by aperol spritzes in the various gardens).
How did I miss your post with my blether?
Also good (although maybe for the likes of us): Hendersons (now up towards Bruntsfield).
And can I have your list? Interested to know what the humour is…
Thank you so much! Super helpful.
If your Airbnb were equidistant from Tesco Express, Marks & Spencer, and Sainsbury’s Local, where would you buy your breakfast food? We just need eggs, bread, cereal, fruit, coffee and (goddess willing) V8.
Grab a bottle of Edinburgh gin to go with the V8.
I was in Edinburgh last month and Noto was around the corner from my hotel. Small plates, nice mix of flavors – fancy but not fussy, and definitely more fun with a couple of people. I stumbled upon Wellington Coffee my first morning there and loved it. I can’t speak for the coffee, but the tea and scones were excellent.
Tbh I’m at a loss: all are likely to have a bakery section (M&S is the poshest of the options) but locals and expresses will likely have what you need (unless they’re restocking and probably not V8 although a polish shop will have an array of juices including vegetable juices). It’s location dependent but basics are usually available. M&S could be the most fun if it’s a dedicated food hall (if you’re looking at the one in Haymarket then no).
Not to pry but if you do share the neighbourhood of the accommodation I might be able to help further.
We’re steps from the Chocolatarium. A thing I do not care about at all.
That’s the third restaurant I’ve bookmarked on that street!
That is a nice place (Wellington) if it’s the one I’m thinking of.
Oh dear. I wish I could offer more advice but that’s the one area I don’t linger. But it is centrally located for sure and you’re easy walk to most places. Enjoy.
Thanks! Yes, we chose it for the proximity to most of the stuff we plan to see.
I like this brand of biscuits baked on the Isle of Mull. The brand has won quite a few awards.
I have followed this baker online for a while.
It’s been several years, but we had a lovely meal at Rocpool in Inverness. Pricey, but we were able to walk-in for lunch.
Have a great time!
Congratulations! I’m so excited to see pictures of your trip. I have been to Edinburgh twice and Inverness once with BeefeaterRocks. Have many, many fond memories of delicious food and gin tastings. Scotch, not so much. The Botanical Gardens were a highlight if you’re into plants. I’m sorry I don’t remember the names of restaurants but the steak, seafood, and potato offerings were not hard to find. I only remember one meh meal in Inverness. Have a wonderful time.
Haha. Remember that breakfast you ordered there with the grated cheese and rolled ham? Still trying to figure that one out.
I second Dishoom and Sheep Heid Inn.
FYI, if you’re making last minute decisions as to where to eat, it was easy to get a reservation. I walked in and booked for the next night; they were very friendly and welcoming. Wellington’s scones will live in my dreams. You can easily share a couple of pastries there and leave full.
That has been recommended to me a couple of times! Thank you, but unfortunately they are closed the days we’ll be in Inverness. It looks lovely.
