Re cocktails: I’m a gin man, so Whitechapel is my shrine. Beautiful interior too, with the main room evoking a Victorian-era tube station. Limited hours, though–last I checked, just Friday through Sunday, and it doesn’t open until 5:30.
Now this is “authenticity”:
Calling SF “The City” makes sense because of geography and its central/capitol city role in the Bay Area. Use to be a major daily commute into “The City”. As for San Fran and Frisco…whatever. I don’t use either but being prickly about it, sorta pretentious and insecure. Shortening a name is standard for nickname and applies to both. I generally agree that you call people what they prefer….but who decides on a whole place? Herb Caen? He’s long gone, as in 25 years, 20th century gone.
What about Cali?
Legal or verboten?
There use to be several regular columns about cheap eats in SF. Dan Leone comes to mind. There was also Bargain Bites in the Chron? I guess that’s long gone with real estate prices and the hyper precious foodie boom. SF use to be packed with good and cheap eats and much was driven by laborers and average folks needing a cheap meal. Resurrecting a cheap eats column or blog would be a great idea…except are there any left?
Best avoided unless you are Notorious B.I.G.
Rappers like it. That’s all I got.
Sorry, this name is taken. But call it whatever you want, and of course makes sense locally.
Worse than leaving Oakland and wearing “The City” jerseys, the Warriors call their fan plaza “Thrive City.”
I love SF, used to live there, have family there, and still a regular stomping ground, but “Thrive City” is pretentious AF.
Huh? What place took “The City”. I said Calling SF “The City” made sense.
New York City
Fuck NYC. They don’t own it.
…and yes, I’m baiting all the whiney NYers who will protest.
My thoughts are “both you girls are pretty.”
I think NY might say
Largest Cities in California:
- Los Angeles (3,919,973)
- San Diego (1,402,838)
- San Jose (1,026,700)
- San Francisco (887,711)
So size matters?
I just looked on the official internet resource for everything…Wikipedia. It mentions several nicknames for NYC, Big Apple, City that Never Sleeps…but no “The City”. Conversely, it lists one of SF’s nicknames as “The City”.
LA gets many like LaLaLand. San Jose use to be called “cow town” by locals. San Diego…next to Mexico.
Ask anyone from Jersey to CT to NY etc and most of the east coast what the city is…yes not “The City” in caps etc lol…im going with ny sorry
San Francisco gets “The City” because of its prominence in post Spanish colonial rule and anglos coming to The City. You know Big Five, robber barons…all those fun people. San Francisco was the first major city on the West Coast linked to trade routes, mining, ag and bunch of other stuff. It was the first major port, before LA. LA didn’t really happen until they got water (a movie was made about it with perhaps a racist reference…that no one talks in Chinatown). My family came as miners, 49ers but not football players.
In any case, go with NYC…but without even a Wiki reference, not buying it.
I spent the first 2 decades of my life on the east coast so that’s my perspective. Maybe just call it the medium size Apple by the bay ?
People, People! @chienrouge @ML8000
I grew up on the end of Long Island, spent 8 years in Manhattan and have lived in San Francisco for over 20 years now so I feel uniquely qualified to weigh in (although I’m already regretting it).
In NY we would always say I’m going into the city to refer to NYC. I’m going back for Christmas and just told the family I’ll be spending a couple of days in the city - there is no question as to what city I am referring to.
When a long weekend comes around these days and people ask if I am going away, I’ll say no I’m staying in the city (SF). So both are correct.
All good! I rarely even hear that I’m part right so I’ll take it.
