Restaurants you dearly miss [Boston, New England]

I LOVED hungry mother - it was a perfect restaurant- I still remember the catfish!

Oh, I loved Hungry Mother. I still remember their incredible ox tongue appetizer.

I’ve got a ton of these. This is just a sample. Lots of mediocre places to be sure, but some worth mentioning here.

Our fishbowl full of matches is a prized possession. It’s fun to look back on local favorites as well as those from our travels. It’s too bad matches are nearly extinct as a give away, but understandable as to why. Internationally it is still somewhat common.

I’ll have to dig through mine at some point. Some bangers in your photos for sure.

I audibly gasped when I saw Biba in there.

I love the pics, but what are matches? Are they an early precursor of matchas?

Same here. Gotta spend a rainy (snowy?) weekend sorting.

If we were lucky enough to have a collection like this we would get them mounted and framed, and hang it in our kitchen.

I was on the phone with my sister when I saw these, and read many of them off to her. When I said “Daisy Buchanan’s” she gasped and said “OMG, I used to go there and party all the time!” She would see Yankees players and other athletes when they were in town. A fun read about Daisy’s:

As for me? The Bull & Finch, Paradise Rock Club, Summer Shack, and Papa Razzi’s jumped out. Would LOVE to see more if you have time, @Alcachofa!

I dug them out when I originally posted this because I was looking for matches to light incense. I didn’t realize I had so many of them! Rather than keep them though, I am using them up, but if I had thought of preserving them that would have been fun. At least they’ll make my room smell pleasant before the memories flit away.

Isn’t Summer Shack still open? God only knows why based on my last few experiences.

I think it is, but I don’t think Jasper White is as involved as he used to be, other than his name? But I could be wrong. When I saw the matchbook cover, it just made me go “ohhh, I remember that roasted lobster with a vanilla beurre blanc!” he brought over from Jasper’s that I shared with a friend at the Cambridge location about 6 months after they opened.

I had forgotten he had passed!

I’ve never been able to square his amazing work at Seasons in the Bostonian Hotel and Jasper’s with Summer Shack. Aside from some chaotic meals at SS, the bartender at the Alewife location trying to pad a bar bill with fictitious drinks - easy to catch because it would have meant 3 drinks each in 20 minutes- left me perpetually disappointed. Hard to imagine that was a one-off by the bartender. Jasper must have been impressed by his “productivity “.

It did seem to be a complete 180° from the high level of dining he used to do.

And the bar bill situation is crazy!

On the other hand, the Alewife location regularly has bluefish, which I rarely see at other restaurants, also $2 oysters, and they recently had Kumamoto oysters (for an upcharge), which we haven’t had in years. My wife also likes to order just a piece or two of fried chicken. Our last meal was quite decent, especially for the price.

The Backroom (for the charcuterie)
Erbaluce (for their carbonara, and he used to let us BYOB upstairs)
Cafe ArtScience (for the cocktails)
B3 (for the music performed by Berklee students)
Cafe Sushi (for the omakase they no longer do)
