Golden Wheat’s Pasteis De Nata today. $1.75/ tart.
Café Belém , a new Portuguese Bakery and Café at 546 College St in the old Kalendar space near Euclid. Run by the Mercado folks. It looked almost open today, I expect a soft opening soon.

I’m looking forward to trying that!
Me, too!
Cafe Belém opened at 546 College Street in the old Kalendar space. I love it.
Tosta Mista / pressed ham and cheese
Nicest pastry and filling I’ve found in a pastel de Nata in Canada. Very crispy. Silky custard filling rather than a firm custard filling. Subtle vanilla.
Lots of canned seafood for sale.
If they’re calling themselves Cafe Belem, they have set the bar high. Hopefully the custard tarts compare.
They are the closest I’ve found in Toronto, esp the pastry. There is a premium, but so far, I think it’s worth it.
The owners also own Mercado restaurant.
I find the Portuguese tarts are always too sweet in Toronto. How sweet are they at Café Belém compare to Pastéis de Belém & others in Lisbon?
I have not been to Belém. I have not been to Lisbon or Porto since 2009.
This is the best pastry crust and the best filling I have found in Toronto. I think it is probably less sweet than most.
Ferreira Caffe on Peel, and Vasco da Gama also on Peel, in Montreal, had a nice version, that was baked to order at Ferreira. It’s been 7 or 8 years since I ordered them.
Back around 2013, I thought Doce Minho made the best version in Toronto.
Over the past 2 years, before Café Belém opened this week, I preferred Santana Bakehouse to Nova Era.
Golden Wheat wasn’t to my taste, compared to Bom Dia on Queen W and Gaspar Café.
I haven’t been to Santana Bakehouse, Bom Dia or Gaspar Café recently so I can’t say much about how they compare, right now , to Cafe Belém.
Try them out and let me know what you think.
I have only had custard tarts in Toronto, LdnOnt, Strathroy, Montreal, Lisbon and maybe Porto.
Ok, that’s it. I’m going there next week.
All that for you??
Go on a Monday ,Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Cafe Belém is closed Tuesdays.
If you like Turkish baklava, also stop at Liu Loqum that’s on the south east corner of College and Euclid, and if you’re up for a 15 minute walk from there, I love Sanagan’s and Fika in Kensington Market.
Further west of Cafe Belém, I recommend bakery Pompette for crème caramel in Bernardin jars and Bricolage west of Ossington.
I stock the DCs with sweets each week.
I gave a pastel de nata to someone who works in my building, so we’re down to 5 pasteis de nata.
I enjoyed the rice cake, strawberry jam thumbprint and jam cake (little financier-like cupcake thingy) on my drive to you know where. Kale and chicken for dinner tonight.
Making note and now preparing to bring along a cooler.
DC’s ?
