Fans of The Thai Shop can rejoice. It has moved successfully to 4 Siam Road (on Thu, Nov 23), near the intersection with Dato’ Kramat Road, and the food is as good as we remembered.
Genial, hands-on owner, Mervyn Wee, is ever welcoming. His platoon of efficient Thai staff from Nakhon Ratchasima/Korat (Isaan region) churned out goodies with clockwork efficiency.
-
Moo ping - grilled pork skewers. Its soft, moist texture, and caramelly-smokey fragrance were very addictive.
-
Sai oua - Northern Thai spicy pork sausages. These fat, juicy minced pork sausages were strongly spiced, with strong lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, and galangal accents.
-
Mama tomyum noodles - egg noodles in spicy-sour soup. Tastiest version we’d had. The only other place in George Town where we’d had as good was Michelin-Selected Whatsaeb on Carnarvon Street.
-
Khao kha moo - braised pig’s trotter, with hard-boiled egg and “kai lan” greens & pickled mustard stems. For some reason, we simply cannot find a version of this dish that comes near those we find in Bangkok in terms of deliciousness. But the one here is pretty respectable:
-
Yum woon sen - Thai glass noodle salad with seafood, sausages and minced pork. I love the one here, but am still searching for a really good one in Penang/Malaysia.
-
Gaeng kaew wan gai - Thai green curry, served with rice and fried egg. Very mild version here - perhaps to suit the Penang clientele’s palate.
-
Khao pad kaprow kai - stir-fried chicken and basil, served with rice and fried egg - a lunch-time staple in Bangkok. Not intensely flavoured enough for me here.
-
Our drinks: Cha-yen (Thai iced milk tea) and iced lemon-tea - the iced mik tea was excellent!
Desserts
9) Khao niew mamuang (Thai-style sticky rice with fresh mango). Love the sweet-salty glutinous rice here - as much as we liked the one at Thara Thai on Prangin Lane.
-
Kluay buatchi maprow on (stewed bananas in coconut milk, with young coconut meat). This dessert, served warm, was a revelation - deliciously sweet and salty. A must-try.
-
Tub tim krob (Thai red rubies & jackfruit in coconut milk iced dessert). One of the best versions in town. P.S. - Thai Shop used to have the best one in town. Then, Thara Thai came along.
A good meal here - the team of Thai chefs worked with clockwork efficiency to deliver each order on-time, and all of which met our expectations, taste-wise. We’re already planning a return trip to try more of the other stuff here.
