After 5 years, APlace 26 has moved from its original location on 26 Bangkok Lane to a bigger, brighter one on 39 Birch Lane. Owner, Catherine Koay, also seemed to feel that the move necessitated a name change on their part, and re-named her eatery, APlace 39.
Catherine spent 12 years of her growing up years in Kota Bharu, and acquired a taste for Kelantanese ππͺππͺ (fermented fish sauce) - a whiff of which can make native Kelantanese salivate whilst sending Penangites into death throes. Catherine Koay serves a very good ππͺππͺ with π πππ€ πππ’, the native Siamese-Kelantanese rice salad.
To hedge her bets, she also offers Penang-style π£ππ¨π πͺπ‘ππ’ - a very beautiful one, at that.
This is the only place in Penang to offer π πππ€ πππ’ and π£ππ¨π πͺπ‘ππ’ side-by-side.
We also ordered a very inspired pomelo salad, with fresh shrimps and toasted peanuts in a tasty sweet-tangy, refreshing Thai dressing, as well as an ambitious stir-fried free range eggs dish called, simply, APlace Fried Eggs on its menu.
In the last 5 years, Catherineβs consistently good cooking has gained her quite a loyal following, with some coming all the way from Kuala Lumpur to dine at her place.
