I’ve tested many sage varieties over the years since I got that one plant, and have never experienced that smell again. Not sure what was up with that one, but I didn’t bring it home with me!

Rosemary, oregano (at least the ornamental ones), lavender, lemon balm are like weeds here, and I do fine with winter savory year round , parsley and cilantro in the winter, basil in the summer.

Sometimes I get chives right, usually shallots, and often garlic. I don’t know why I struggle with mint of various persuasions.

I really want to do better with tarragon, and I’m inspired to try chervil.

Probably your weather. If you’re growing parsley and coriander in the winter (and doing well with the likes of basil), then I assume youre living in quite a warm area. Whereas mint likes the cool and damp that makes it perfect for my little plot in northwest England (where I can’t grow basil, even in summer)

Yes; folks in NorCal would call it “hella hot” May through October. And dry. Our rain comes November through March if we’re lucky.

But I keep trying. Sometimes I manage to get a bit from “sub irrigation planters” but it’s often on my “buy, not grow” list.

it’s a pc .exe program - runs under Windows but the user has to adjust the “properties” of the window for optimum viewing.

My parents, in FL also have trouble with mint. As Harters mentions, it’s likely the heat and daylength, plus winter chill requirements which makes mint troublesome in hot climates. The typical growth cycle for mint: early-mid spring-about 8 hours sun=quick growth of new shoots. Plants can tolerate 85-97°F (29-36°C) as spring turns to summer and flowers form(long daylength). Later in the summer, the tall growth dies down, some modest regrowth can occur, but the tall, dying stalks should be mowed down before any new growth appears.

Finally, as very cold weather sets in, the plants die down to runners, right at the soil surface. This is the time when cold weather is required, the winter dormancy. If too warm, the metabolism of the plants is too high and they use up calories. The result, poor regrowth in the spring, very weak plants.

When in its growth cycle, mint can tolerate some exposure to hotter temperatures. I maintained a large patch of spearmint, on a south-facing slope above a bricked herb garden, surrounded by American boxwoods. The temperatures in there were brutal during midday summers, often exceeding 100°F (38°C), but it was also humid. The soil temperature, shaded by the dense foliage, was substantially cooler, and that’s important.

I had no idea that mint needed chill hours. I’m guessing that 110 degrees and 3% humidity doesn’t do much for them, either. Now I have a better idea of when to grow it, being partial to lime mint

Yikes! Mint clearly won’t like that. It might be possible to grow mint indoors, under lights, with a constant day length of around 10–12 hours. Dormancy in many plants is triggered by shortening days and/or cooling temperatures.

Even with a wood stove running, the humidity in the house is around 20%. The guitars have home made humidifiers in their cases to keep them around 40%. 3% rH is unfriendly to more than plants not adapted to it.

Mint grows wild here. Most commonly, I find it growing next to streams and in marshy places. Interestingly, the quality of these mints is usually better than mints grown in gardens, the flavors are usually less grassy, with more menthol and mint flavor.

What I don’t know is: what happens if you grow mint in a hot climate, as an annual, in very wet soil? It may respond well, or it may just rot. The roots would need good air/oxygen in such a setup, to avoid stagnant conditions.

So maybe hydroponics! I wonder if that’s what they do commercially in California. There is an “herb farm” nearby that sells several varieties in small pots. I’ve only tried to do it in pots, usually sub-irrigated, and seems to be getting along sometimes, but never great, and never like store bought.

Indeed! Here’s an article on it. However, I’m not certain the claim that high temperatures alone make mint bolt; maybe, but the mint here doesn’t bolt right away after some pretty hot early spring days. It always blooms during the long days of summer.

Like many plants, mint likes foliar feeding. A higher nitrogen/lower phosphorous liquid feed is best, along with some seaweed in-between. You can also shade mint quite a bit before it suffers greatly.

The above paragraph is also true for parsley in hot, sunny climates. However, excessive heat makes parsley much more prone to crown rot. Out here, there’s also a pesky weevil grub that eats out the plant’s center, usually killing it.

It’s funny, I’m not that crazy about mint or Shiso/Perilla, but they’re weeds out here! The mints stick close to water, but the Shiso is everywhere, a real pest.

Yeah, no kidding! Very wet soil is hard to come by here when it’s that hot, although there’s a riparian area at a local park close by, I’d be okay trying it out. It’s artificial, so no chance of being an invasive species, besides, the rabbits and javelinas and ducks would probably gobble it up, but it’s worth a try

Both plants and humans thermoregulate overheating by evaporating water. In very humid air, sweat and water don’t evaporate; humans stay hot and so do plants. I know very few folks of European heritage that are fine with heat and humidity. I know a lot of people from South America, Mexico and Borneo who are just fine with jungle conditions. I don’t get that!

With plants, which can’t move to get out of sunlight, it’s important they have plenty of water to cool off. If the ambient air is, say, 100°F (38°C), the sun hitting leaves drives the leaf surface temperatures over that. Plants open pores, “stomata” to vent water and gasses. If the air is humid, cooling capability is diminished. If the air is super dry, low humidity, cooling depends on good availability of water uptake.

With humans, insufficient water uptake in dry climates can lead to all sorts of disorders, kidney stones, skin problems and many other issues. We can only guess the maladies occurring in the plant world under similar stresses. Some mineral deficiencies, such as calcium deficiency during drought, are well-known. Other deficiencies or diseases are less chronicled.

That may explain why squash plants always droop in the dry hot summer- they can’t take up enough water to make up for the big thin leaves’ transpiration.

Yes, that happens here, typically midday. I’d avoid spraying the foliage, lest mildews and other fungi take advantage of the moisture. If the plants perk up without damage when the sun abates, I’d suggest ignoring the wilt. If damage is evident, some midday shade would help. There is a clay/kaolin spray-on product, “Surround”, which may reduce leaf temperature, though I’ve not used that product yet.

Is there a point at which that is no longer a concern? I’ve wondered if I still needed to worry about moisture on leaves since it’s so dry here, but last year I lost almost all my tomato plants.
