Another trip to Nouvelle Maison. I did a repeat of the wild mushroom mix and the gigandes beans—the mushroom mix is much better this time. Beans are again quite tasty. I got a multi-seeded baguette, a couple of pain au chocolat per Spring Onion request, a hunk of Gouda, and wine. Sounds like dinner to me!
Seems a bit more organized in there. All the tables were taken, and there were a pleasant number of customers inside (last time I was there, it felt awkward and empty).
Great to hear about your revisit. We need to go back to Winchester. I just read about the beautiful HH Richardson Library in Woburn. My family could really benefit from a several-stop field trip from Somerville.
Another visit to Nouvelle Maison after dropping off spring onion at his farm class at Wright-Locke Farm. Their wine selection is always delightful and I even got some beer this time. Local strawberries, aged Gouda cheese, gigandes beans, crackers from Maine.
I feel more sad than usual today. I just found out that our neighbors lost their dopey and lovely 8-year-old golden retriever a couple of weeks ago to aggressive cancer. I haven’t told Spring Onion yet; he’s going to be very sad.
This one’s for you, George!
His last weekend was spent on the beach, which is exactly how I’d want to spend mine.
ETA: That’s George’s little brother, Eddie, in the background. Eddie usually gives us a friendly bark when we come home, but we haven’t seen him in a couple of weeks. He’s bummed out. We need to give him a hug (and I’m not even an animal person). Their dad is an Ohio State alum, thus their names. @truman would understand.
Eddie, by the way, was dog-napped during the Covid years. There was such an outcry and campaign to find him that one day, he magically re-appeared in the yard.
Hugs to Eddie and the human neighbors… that is such a sweet and sad story. I’m sure George enjoyed his beach time. When the neighbors are ready to adopt another pup, we (DH and I) suggest naming him Archie!
Ooh, I’m sorry. Big hugs to the neighbors. What a cute and beautiful dog. Even with losing elderly parents, somehow losing my pets were the hardest losses I’ve ever had to endure. You’re never ready, whether as a pet parent or just good friend.
To keep this on topic, I’ll post early intel regarding a Korean-French fusion (??) restaurant that is planned for 60 Billings Rd in Quincy. I haven’t been down that end of the block. There was a vacant bakery I know around that area. I’ve seen posts that say it will be called Seoul or Seoule, but I can’t find corroborating information online yet. Will keep an eye out for more updates on this.
Apparently the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts opened a cafe roughly across from their Mass Ave location sometime late in 2024:
They’re right next to an army recruitment center and, mistaking them for a joint where coffee might lead to conscription, I always hurried past – a man in my superbly rotund physical shape has to worry about being pressed into service. But, overcoming that anxiety, I popped in a few days ago:
So, how is it? Their croissant had the resplendent tang of cultured butter, and the outside had satisfactory shatter, but Holy Krishna, that doughy, dense inside. Not a good ad for a culinary school. On a better note, their cutely-named coffee bean pastry was very good as were their orange-ganache chocolates.
thanks for posting about this! Every time we drive by there, I have wondered about that cafe, which from the signage suggests that might be located inside the Army recruiting center, and used to entice potential enlistees!
We go to Pemberton Farm and Momma’s quite often. I did not want to chance suggesting that we go in the newish cafe nearby with our 23 year old son! Not that he’d be tempted…and he has flat feet…
