Just FYI … in case someone is interested, this is for Kaiseki Hashimoto. LOL
so you are paying an extra $2.23.
I’m far from wealthy, but spending an extra $2.23 is something I’d let go. It’s up to you, obviously, if you don’t want to.
Sometimes, I look at the costs before tax when I get the check, move a decimal point and multiple by 2 for 20%. It’s really easy. And I put that in as the tip. Not difficult even for someone as math challenged as I am.

So Stevey was comparing $18 for tipping before tax, and $20.23 if tipping after tax.
I was using Stevey’s math. $20.23 - $18 = what?
Oh, I see caviartothegeneral deleted their post telling me my math was off.
Whoops, thought you were commenting on a different post. Sorry!
Still not used to Hungry Onion’s confusing layout.
Tipping is definitely getting out of hand in North America. Especially now that I pay mostly by tapping, everyone that flip the screen around and ask you for a tip. Worst offender was Economy Candy in NYC. I picked out my own candy at a candy shop and you ask me for a tip? WTF?
just decline the tip.
They buy the software that includes the tip question. They can’t eliminate it from the software they use to process the card payments.
I agree that you can decline the tip, but it’s an embarrassing thing to do.
I have also had taxi drivers tear a strip off me before a flight when they have thought they were entitled to a higher tip that they got. Airports and travel are stressful enough without that. I admit, I usually take the train or bus to the airport these days since having 3 bad airport taxi and limo service experiences in Toronto. I’m someone who tends to tip taxi drivers 12-15 percent unless there’s a problem and the driver has been rude or unprofessional.
I sometimes tip 15% at restaurants because I don’t want to deal with conflict or a snarky comment from an entitled mediocre server. I tend to tip 18% or more when the table service (full service restaurant) is good.
No Uber where you live?
I don’t use Uber.
I’ve used 2 taxis since 2020. I like Maple Leaf Taxi in TO. Beck has been pretty good.
Haven’t used a cab since Uber came out, except for Airport limo, and a couple in Europe, cause it’s the only option.
I won’t ever pay for Uber. I’ve been a passenger when someone else is paying a few times.
What’s your beef with uber?
Uber is UBER fantastic!
I mean… always depends on the driver
Only ever had one bad driver, in SF and her car was a shite hole of a mess. I have a 5* rating from the drivers btw
I’ve only used Uber a few times professionally but found it to be waay out of whack/norm when I did.
How so?
