Hotpot Factory at 366 8th Street in Oakland Chinatown has been open for a week or so and is the only U.S. outlet of a restaurant in Southern China. The menu appears to be a mix of Korean, Shainghainese and Cantonese dishes with prices ranging from about $13 for a complete lunch on up.

Their location is the former Chilli Padi Malyasian restaurant which had been there about 3 years and got a good review from Luke Tsai in the East Bay Express.

The interior looks the same and the exterior shows some changes to the signage.

Menu items include stinky tofu appetizer ($5), chongqing chicken and Korean Cheese.

Currently they are in ‘soft opening’ mode and if you search around you should find some discounts.

Apparently there is now a new Laotian place- The Saap Avenue - on Piedmont near Fenton’s.

It’s Chai Thai Bar rebranding itself. in former Adesso spot.

Per Eater Nov 20, 2017:

Supasit Puttikaew has departed his position as chef de cuisine at San Francisco’s Hawker Fare to open his own Thai and Laotian restaurant, which will be called Funky Elephant. Puttikaew has secured the former Doughnut Dolly space in the Temescal. 482 B 49th St, Oakland (no opening date given)

On Thursday, Dec. 14, Anjan and Emily Mitra’s new casual concept, a counter-service “dosa by DOSA,” will open at the Hive, a work-live-eat space in Oakland’s Uptown district.
The plan is a seven-day operation, with breakfast, lunch and dinner options.

Should we soon start a new thread, “Oakland news and notes 2018” for the new year? This thread with 112 posts runs kind of slow on my old system.
