Nashville hot chicken [Toronto]

Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich from Friday Burger Company for $16. Thin slice of chicken with lots of almost burnt salty batter. Heat was mainly from the dry spice dusting. Nice heat but the salt and batter made it unenjoyable.

Got around to trying THG Hot Chicken today. Their menu is confusing. Basically the difference between sandwich vs slider is 2 vs 1 chicken tenders. Difference between the sandwiches are toppings and sauce. Like the Nashville Hot Chicken uses the comeback sauce and Spicy Chicken uses spicy blackened sauce. The level of spiciness is adjusted independent of sauce.

Anyway, the jumbo tenders are breasts so expect a dry chicken. Coating was sauce and dusting but not as complex as Chica’s. I ordered Hot and X-Hot. The X-Hot was noticeably redder and both were actually slightly below my personal “hot” level. So my guess is their “T.O.'s Hottest” level is doable for me. Their X-Hot was milder than Chica’s “Hot AF” or Dave’s “Extra Hot”. Their comeback sauce is sweet and doses the heat quite a bit. Personally I would put their Nashville Hot Chicken below Chica’s and Dave’s.

Check their website for their Mon-Thu savings which are not advertised in-store.

Finishing up the summer with a double header. First up, PG Clucks. Their online menu mentions their by-the-piece chicken is available in Nashville Hot. However, the in-store menu only mentions regular and spicy. No “Nashville” mentioned in their in-store displays. We had their signature classic regular and two piece spicy. They didn’t have a spice level you could choose other than regular and spicy.

Their regular sandwich includes hot sauce but was mild to my taste. Very juicy meat with creamy dressings. The complexity of the spicing is definitely above average and made for a really good sandwich.

The spicy 2 piece had similar spicing complexity as the sandwich but with an additional dusting of chilli powder. I would rate this as medium spicy when combined with the hot sauce side. The hot sauce side was really tasty and among the top I’ve had this year. One nice detail is their two piece was de-boned dark meat which made for easy juicy eatin’. Also one of the better coleslaw sides in town.

One thing we didn’t know is you can order your dark meat chicken “well done” as the customer after us did. But… why? I guess some people prefer dry meat.

A block away was Chen Chen’s. The sign in-store says “Born in China, Raised in Nashville, Serving in Toronto”. Their menu was interesting, including a Szechuan Nashville hot sandwich. We had the Nashville hot sandwich (hot level as our server said their level is hotter than the others in town) and the 2 piece OG boneless (southern level).

We were disappointed in the chicken. Even though it was dark meat, it was “well done” and dry. The spice mix was quite simple and would rate it as medium hotness. I guess “Poultrygeist” spice level is very doable and their level is not hotter than the others. The dressing on the sandwich was pretty pedestrian. While PG Clucks used sweet pickles, Chen Chen used regular ones with reduced acidity. Their 2 piece southern was pretty bland after tasting all the others that day.
