Misfits Market: ugly produce online

Today’s box. 2 champagne mangos, small head of lettuce, bok choy, spaghetti squash, bunch of cilantro, 4 gala apples, 3 little cucumbers, a yam?, 8 potatoes, a head of cauliflower and 4 onions. I’m still on the fence about this but honestly, I love the mystery box-ness of it.

Thank you! I should have known! I never eat either!

I would certainly hope that an “extra” produce would be donated to the hungry and the needy, and not just thrown away or wasted. At bare minimum, maybe even toss into a giant compost pile that can help add nutrients back into the earth.

Actual yield can be so unpredictable, given the weather (especially in light of climate change) and other possible problems, that I can’t imagine we’ll ever get to so precise a planning and planting that we have just what we need. I would argue that overproduction in itself isn’t really that big of a problem (not delving into big farming, chemicals pesticides, etc that are separate issues). As others have noted, the problem is the getting food to the people who need it and the huge carbon food print that creates, even when we try. As opposed to making the ugly produce cheaper or sending it across states, in reality we could probably use a whole lot more of smaller farms spread across regions (and not centralized to our midwest and other farming regions) who are ensuring their ‘waste’ (ugly, bruised, otherwise unwanted) produce go to the local needy in speedier and most cost effective fashion.

Not just Gracie, but everyone: please mention whether your box is single or double. I’m not very good at estimating, but the pic looks like more than 11-12 pounds to me.

A bunch of cilantro? I’d end up freezing most of it–that’s not something that I could use a lot of very fast.

Makes good “latkes” surprisingly!

Also raw in salad, though I don’t love it plain… maybe shredded like a thai papaya salad…

Good point. This is a single, 10lb box. All I can think of is guacamole and guacamole and guacamole. Spoiler alert, likely making guacamole tomorrow!

I can’t find the emoticon but imagine exploding head emoticon here

That’s a wild idea and I love it. I may need to try pan frying these outside. Inside gets too smelly/smokey/gross for me. Terrible hood fan and all.

If you braise or stirfry the bok choy, you can add the cauliflower greens and core. Just slice the leaves and core thinly. They are tasty.

Today’s Mischief box is a dandy assortment: 2 big russet spuds, 3 small beets, 3 lemons, 3 small peaches, 4 apples, a generous clamshell of, I think, baby spinach, a clamshell of cherry tomatoes, 5 small red onions, a bunch of scallions, 2 green bell peppers, 2 small zukes, 2 large cukes and a 7 oz bottle of caramelized onion basil salad dressing (optional 95¢ add-on).

Expect my next delivery this Friday. Would be very happy with this
selection of items.

Correction: the dressing has sesame seed, not basil. It’s delish. The lemon basil was the other dressing I was considering.

Our 3rd (or maybe 4th) box came Friday. Baby lettuce, radishes, potatoes, onions, squash, tomatoes, pears small peppers, green onions and kale. A flyer in the box said they were changing packaging and expanding their mission, to look for “a few more surprises in the
coming weeks”.

My box arrived today and I am NOT pleased. It was a day late so perhaps that was the issue? I had to toss 2 things right away since they were rotten (dandelion greens and a head of lettuce). I have already sent them an email with pics so we will see what they do. Besides those, a small bag of peas, bag of mushrooms, cucumber, 3 peaches, 2 mangoes, 4 oranges, a spaghetti squash (which I still have one from the last box. Suggestions welcome!), 2 zucchini, 2 green peppers and 2 very sad looking ears of corn.

That’s disappointing. Plus it looks like it created a bit of work to clean off the sludge from other produce.

Yes, it was quite a mess. I will give them another shot but had anticipated putting the service on hold during the summer anyway.

Dandelion greens? That’s like sending you air–for most people they’re free for the picking on their lawn!

HA! Good point. I pretty sure that was what those were anyway? They were so darn sad looking.

Yeah, fragile greens and roly, round things with heavier weight really don’t belong in a box together without some additional cushioning or protection. That’s too bad. :frowning: With summer time being prime time for so many greens, I hope this isn’t going to be typical for you and other customers.
