Mid-Coast Maine 2021

Sadly, I concur. I keep looking for something I deeply disagree with you two – @tomatotomato and @GretchenS – on, so that I can engage you in a duel, but you keep disappointing me.

I think we passed Larson’s at least twice this past summer. And now even more sorry that we did.

Did you have the excellent blueberry muffins at the Dolphin? I’ve prob tried 50 dif bb muffin recipes over the years trying to come close to those muffins with no success🤔.

We did not. We’re making another trip up that way in September, so on your recommendation I want to try the blueberry muffins now.

Our meal at The Dolphin Marina and Restaurant was our first. Our super kind server explained to us that those blueberry muffins (and coffee) were the first things the eatery sold back in the day. Apparently this family-owned place is still going strong.

ETA: I wonder if this old-timey Maine blueberry cake recipe might scratch the itch even though it’s not the same? A friend who grew up in Maine recommended it to me last year and we liked it a lot.

Ha, maybe a dance off or a rap battle instead? Never mind, I can’t do those things either.

I went to Up In Smoke BBQ to get essentially one of everything to share with some friends and when we spread it all out on the table I FORGOT TO TAKE PICTURES!!! So all I have for you is a shot of jerk chickens being taken off the grill I took while waiting. You can imagine how good it smelled…

Thanks for the heads-up! I really enjoyed them in June. Sadly, my next mid-coast jaunt won’t get me as far as Rockland but I’ll see about getting there in September.

This seemed like a good place for a Damariscotta update, albeit a sad one. Schooner Landing was destroyed in a fire on 1 Sept. We’d been there once a few years ago. We liked the setting but the food was just ok. However, I’ve learned that it was known for their live music scene and as all-around community-centered place. Hope they can rebuild something awesome there.

Oof. We were in Damariscotta a couple weeks ago and saw the terrible fire damage to the restaurant property.

Made us sad because Schooner Landing was one of the places where we could sit outdoors with our dog. The staff was especially kind too.

Agree that the food was just OK, but the oysters were the freshest we’d ever had. Turns out that the seeding stage of oyster farming was taking place on the water directly in front of restaurant’s wharf. Our server pointed out that the oyster farm itself was not far down the river.

In this photo from our lunch at Schooner Landing this summer, if you squint verrry hard and use your imagination, you can almost see the platform where the oyster seeding was taking place. It was that close!

I echo your hope that they can rebuild.

I did not know that (not sure how I missed it), how very sad!

Larson’s returned under new ownership (the folks that own Damariscotta River Grill, in fact). I haven’t been back since the changeover but the reviews seem good.

It’s still one of my favorite seasonal lunch places. The burger is not as good as under old ownership but the tuna roll went from good to divine and they have added new menu items. Lovely folks!!

Not on the coast, but wondering if you folks have ever checked out Black Crow Bakery in [Litchfield, ME} near Richmond? It was a few years ago but we enjoyed the sourdough breads and a visit to the bakery when visiting friends. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063524951977&sk=about

Its a lovely place and the bread tastes great.
