[Madrid, Spain] Trip report, July 2025

Wow, that was a *very * long walk from Antón Martín. I applaud you for doing that in these temps!

I agree that the basement supermarket at Sol has a better selection than the supermarket on the Castellana. I just avoid Sol at all costs due to the crowds. I’ve seen crema de pistacho at the Antón Martín market at the Pistachería but not oil.

I buy clothes at ECI on the Castellana so I’ve learned my way around. I also lived nearby on General Perón and that ECI was my daily go to, long ago. The complex has grown larger and larger over the years, yes, sprawling. I do go up there at Christmas, as they have a dozen food trucks there, including a GoXO and picnic tables just for the holidays. They’ve opened a 3rd Uniqlo there.

No, no, I did not walk from Antón Martín to Castellana! I took the subway to Nuevos Ministerios. And, you know, it is not far from that subway station to ECI. But it feels like a lot when one is standing in full sun with several lanes of traffic zipping by in either direction, waiting for a light that is clearly not designed with pedestrians in mind.

I did check at the Pistachería and was disappointed. I don’t understand how they could have so many pistachio products and not oil. It is my favourite on salads.

I forgot to go to the Uniqlo! I had intended to, but it was driven out of my head by wandering around ECI, and I didn’t even remember until I got back to Lisbon. We don’t have one here.

Bistronómicos on my list to try during the “re entry”, getting solid praise from the gastro press and my food lover friends:

Taberna Chiripa at Calle Espartinas 6 in Salamanca
Caja de Cerillas at Donoso Cortés 8 in Chamberí

Now I understand. Thank goodness! You took the metro to NM.

I’ll look around to see if I can find some aceite de pistacho.

These look interesting, particularly Taberna Chiripa, which is an easy walk for you. I look forward to your reports!

The global dubai chocolate craze has made it harder to find products made from high quality pistachios (including oil). But maybe there is a good local source that hasn’t sold out to the trend.
