[London WC2] Rules

Yes I quite understand the logic and it makes complete sense.
Here’s a little tempter though.
Lardy cake and custard drizzled with Lyles syrup.

So beautiful. In case anyone in London is craving Rhubarb Pavlova.

I hope @Harters is ok - haven’t heard from him in a while. Hopefully he’s on holiday in Spain.

Back from the three week “fly and flop” last Wednesday evening. Relaxed - and fatter than usual. Food was OK. Nothing to shout from the rooftops about but I’ll do a summary of sorts for the Spain board. Nice to have been awayu and nice to be back - just spent a pleasant hour in the garden, cutting back all the plants I should have cut back before Xmas.

The asparagus season traditionally starts on 23 April (appropriately that’s St George’s Day) but I suppose with climate warming, the season will be coming earlier.

I’m glad it’ll still be in full swing when we get to Berlin (almost a month later than usual), and I’ll catch a few weeks of chanterelles season, too

PS: Do you only get the green stuff, or the white gold, too?

I’m pretty sure that white isnt grown as a commercial crop here. I know you can buy it from specialist suppliers but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a supermarket or greengrocer.

I remembered my first time visiting a white asparagus farm back in 2000 - it was in Wiesloch, a short drive from Heidelberg where I was staying during a business trip.

Very lucky to catch the season - I was told they were grown completely underground, buried under mounds of soil to prevent sunlight exposure, thus blocking photosynthesis and the development of chlorophyll.

Similar to the very early Yorkshire forced rhubarb which is grown in light-free sheds.

Belgian endive is also grown like this, and some types of radicchio.

Yup, and you are doubly lucky bc the area around Heidelberg (Schwetzingen in particular) is a renowned Spargel-growing area. It’s all about terroir with this veg.

We’re going down to London in the summer to see a play, during the afternoon. We’ll probably book dinner at Rules for the evening.

We are hoping to spend a few days in London this June or July. It would be absolutely brilliant to meet up with you and @medgirl

I am absolutely up for that.
