Laos Thai [Lowell, MA]

We found the nam khao to be Truly Scrumptious**! Very unlike any of our usual dishes and definitely worth going out of one’s way for! The tapioca balls were also a hit- I ate half the order in the restaurant for lunch while waiting for our takeout to be completed and the family divided up the rest for dinner. I loved the pile of herbs and lettuce wraps. We played it safe with an order of pad thai, our standard comparison dish, as we do after all have to feed our sprouts. This was sweeter than usual with a slightly different overall flavor profile. I got less tamarind that most versions. I also got a pork laab which was very nice with a lot of lime and was a generous portion.**

I will admit, the gaeng nor mai was not at all to our taste, although it is fair to say it was like nothing I’ve had before. The brown murky sauce and variable sized mushy chunks of veg did not do it for me, and although I was not asked a spice level on that particular dish, it was way spicier than even the excellent laab which we got medium, so no one else in the family was able to eat even a small portion. Luckily, we live in a very active Buy Nothing community and a complete stranger nabbed the quart off the porch within minutes.

Hello! Nice to see you back here! I will keep Lanxang Star on my radar, although I am lucky in that I do not need to be careful with my gluten avoidance, and can even have a smattering breadcrumbs or such- it’s just a quantity issue for me, apparently.

I have another load of saddles from Pelham in my car, and will need to make yet another trip back up sometime in the next week or so, so good eats await!

I’m sorry the gaeng nor mai wasn’t right for you! But I’m glad the nam khao was good. It’s such a perfect combination of flavors and textures for me, a little bit of everything.

How does this horse business work?

Would Curio offer me multiple spice grinders of different sizes to take home and try?
Skenderian Apothecary different toilet seat attachments?

Woman, you must be so connected. (Note to self: cultivate @Parsnipity .)

Lest you think I exaggerate:

A saddle is the interface between two very different species, and as such occupies a liminal space where its form and function must reinforce trust and cooperation between a thousand pound prey animal and a fragile human attempting to remain seated on said animal. A week to test a saddle out hardly seems sufficient. Perhaps you can ask Curio about a spice grinder loan? Also a very fraught relationship.
