Japan board

Interested in ramping the board activity up? Please register your interest here:

The purpose of this thread is to connect folks from this geo so they know 1) there is mutual interest in building up the board and 2) that if one start posting there will be others who join in at the same time, to avoid the ‘are there others here?’ syndrome.

You may say, well why not just start posting? Please do that too, but please comment your interest in this thread as well. The problem is that if interested user A post a review on the 1st. Interested User B sees the review on the 15th, doesn’t comment. Interested user C sees the review on the 30th, doesn’t comment. Users A, B, and C may all individually think that there is minimal interest in such a board.

But if users A, B, and C all express their interest in this thread and start talking around the same time, we can avoid the problem of ‘the illusion of lack of interest due to time lag in interested users coming onto the site.’

Is there anybody living or traveling a lot in Japan? Hands up and don’t be shy!

I would love to read more about this cuisine and the food scene.
(Does the French chefs going to Tokyo counts?!)

I’ll be in Tokyo/Narita 5/6 January 2016 if anyone would like to meet up. (I’ll also be either in Okinawa or somewhere else on Honshu 1-4 January, but Tokyo’s dates are the only definite ones.)

If it helps, I’ve visited Tokyo/its environs around twenty times in the past ten years.

Nope, not in Japan, but would like to be there though. :innocent:

It will be interesting if you can report back some high lights on your trip. Last time to Japan was a few years ago, one of the best part was attending the tuna auction at 4am, eating sushi and bought a pair of knives in the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. The market is moving soon, no? Sad to see this.

It does appear that Tsukiji Shijou will move next year, but I’m ambivalent about the new location. Tsukiji was cool when I first went years ago, but they do their precious best to be bothered by tourists.

There are plenty more fish markets in Japan that don’t hate foreigners as much. Or, hit up the ones in Korea…I long for another visit to Jagalchi in Busan.

I live in Tokyo and I would love to talk about something other than high-priced sushi and Michelin-starred restaurants. There are over 100,000 restaurants in Tokyo, but over at a certain other website, all anyone wants to talk about is sushi, and occasionally ramen.

HI Umami, I love your avatar!

Yes please, there are many interesting cooking in Japan, I remembered we had a fantastic night at a wine bar at the outskirt of Tokyo serving small dishes (selection was small), their grilled calamar was fantastic. (We got the restaurant information with a magazine in Hong Kong, no way they will be in the major guide books). We had also a wonderful meal in a barbecued beef restaurant. Some side streets specialised ramen and rice are wonderful. Actually even their version of foreign cuisine is interesting, because they are so adapted to taste of the japanese that they are no longer Chinese or French.

I will try to post a bit here and I hope we reach a quorum…

OK, I guess there isn’t a Japan board to post on yet.

Yeah, right now the Japanese posts will go to the Asia board. Until enough new posts and users, there will be a separate Japan board on HO. The same goes to most countries.

One of my favorite nuanced aspects of larger cities in Japan is the presence of prefectural “antenna shops.” Don’t have time to visit Kyoto, Hokkaido, Okinawa, or Gifu? Stores representing famous food and drink, arts, crafts, and other aspects of these locations and more can be found throughout Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, among other cities.

I see the J board is up now!! Now it needs some postings…
